State Sales Tax Analyst

DescriptionHorner Industrial Group is seeking a detail-oriented and knowledgeable State Sales Tax Analyst to support our growing organization. This role is responsible for ensuring accurate sales and use tax compliance across multiple entities and jurisdictions. The ideal candidate will bring strong experience with Avalara, ERP systems, and multi-state sales tax regulations.This position plays a critical role in maintaining compliance, supporting audits, and ensuring proper tax treatment of customer transactions.Key ResponsibilitiesServe as the functional expert for Avalara (third-party tax software)Ensure customer tax exemption certificates are properly collected, reviewed, validated, and maintainedUpload transactional data from ERP systems into Avalara for sales tax reporting purposesMaintain and update ERP systems to ensure accurate tax calculations at time of invoicingReview general ledger postings and control accounts to ensure tax accuracy and reconciliationAct as point of contact for documentation related to drop shipments and resale transactionsPrepare and review multi-state sales and use tax returnsMonitor changes in state and local tax regulations and assess impact to the organizationAssist with sales tax audits, including gathering documentation and responding to inquiriesReconcile sales tax payable accounts and investigate discrepanciesPartner with accounting, sales, and customer service teams to resolve tax-related issuesSupport process improvements and internal controls related to tax complianceMaintain accurate documentation and audit-ready recordsQualificationsBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field preferred3+ years of experience in sales and use tax compliance, preferably in a multi-state environmentStrong working knowledge of AvalaraExperience working within ERP systems (experience with multiple ERPs a plus)Solid understanding of state sales tax regulations and exemption requirementsStrong reconciliation and general ledger review experienceHigh attention to detail and strong organizational skillsAbility to work independently and meet deadlinesExcellent communication skills and ability to collaborate cross-functionally
