Job Title: CNC Setup MachinistJob DescriptionThis role focuses on performing complete setups and operation of 3- and 5-axis CNC milling machines to produce prototype and production parts from solid models, blueprints, and engineering drawings. You will independently set up tooling and fixtures, verify first articles, and make program edits at the machine using Heidenhain controls to ensure high-quality, precise components for advanced manufacturing projects.ResponsibilitiesPerform complete short-run CNC mill setups on 3- and 5-axis machines, including tooling selection, fixture setup, setting offsets, and first-article verification.Set up and run 3- and 5-axis CNC milling machines for both prototyping and production runs across a variety of materials such as aluminum, steel, and graphite.Edit Heidenhain programs at the machine, including adjusting offsets, modifying feeds and speeds, and making minor code changes as needed.Read and interpret technical documentation, including blueprints, engineering drawings, orthographic projections, sectional views, part notes, dimensions, and tolerances.Apply sound machining principles, including appropriate cutting methods, feed and speed selection, and proper tool selection for each job.Perform in-process and final quality inspections using precision measuring tools to confirm parts meet dimensional and tolerance requirements.Troubleshoot machining and program issues at the machine, making necessary adjustments to maintain part quality and productivity.Handle multiple setups per day in a fast-paced environment, efficiently transitioning between different jobs and part configurations.Collaborate with team members and support staff to ensure smooth workflow, clear communication, and on-time delivery of parts.Essential SkillsMinimum of 3 years of experience performing full CNC mill setups on 3- and 5-axis machines, including tooling selection, fixturing, setting offsets, and verifying dimensions.Strong hands-on experience setting up and running CNC milling machines for both prototype and production work.Proficiency working independently with Heidenhain controls, including editing programs at the machine, adjusting offsets, modifying feeds and speeds, troubleshooting, and making minor code changes.Ability to read and interpret blueprints and technical drawings, including orthographic views, sectional views, tolerances, and part notes.Solid understanding of machining principles, including cutting methods, feed and speed selection, and tool selection.Experience using precision measuring tools to perform quality inspections and verify tight tolerances.Demonstrated ability to work effectively in a fast-paced machining environment with multiple setups per day.Reliable work habits and consistent attendance to support production schedules and team needs.Additional Skills & QualificationsExperience with Fanuc and/or Fidia controllers.Experience in prototype machining, particularly for automotive or aerospace applications.Familiarity with aerospace machining requirements and standards.Knowledge of WorkNC or similar CAM software.Experience with fixture design or a strong fixture setupPrevious experience in environments focused on prototypes, tooling, and fabrication for OEM or Tier 1 suppliers.Why Work Here?You will join a growing, forward-focused manufacturer that specializes in niche and prototype work, giving you the chance to perform multiple setups each day instead of running the same job repeatedly. The environment is high-paced and focused on automotive and aerospace prototypes, tooling, and fabrication for OEM and Tier 1 supplier work. You will work primarily with 3- and 5-axis CNC milling machines using Heidenhain controls, with exposure to additional technologies such as Fanuc, Fidia, and WorkNC where applicable. Standard hours are on first shift, from 6:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday, with regular Saturday work from 6:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m., typically totaling 50–60 hours per week. The shop is organized to support multiple setups per day and high-mix, low-volume work, providing a structured yet dynamic manufacturing environment.Job Type & LocationThis is a Contract to Hire position based out of Macomb, MI.Pay and BenefitsThe pay range for this position is $32.00 - $40.00/hr.Eligibility requirements apply to some benefits and may depend on your job classification and length of employment.
