Sexton Job Description Job Summary The role of the Sexton of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church is to care for the overall state and wellbeing of the property of St. Mark’s; to know the ins and outs of the building and grounds; and to oversee the upkeep of the temporal assets of the parish. The Sexton will: Be responsible for the overall cleanliness and upkeep of the building. Take care of all set up of the Parish Hall for weekly and special events. Know the building’s needs both inside and outside and see to regular maintenance in collaboration with members of the Building Committee. Clean and care for the safety of the Preschool. Collaborate with other members of staff to ensure that spaces suit the needs of the parish for events, rehearsals, and meetings. Uphold the values and mission of the church. Maintain confidentiality when necessary. Demonstrate compassion and understanding toward those with whom they interact. Foster a welcoming and inclusive environment for all members of the congregation. Responsibilities Perform routine cleaning and maintenance of church facilities according to a schedule set forth in consultation with the Rector. Set up and take down furniture and equipment for weekly services, meetings. Provide cleaning and set up for special events. Ensure that all areas are stocked with necessary supplies such as paper products and cleaning materials. Conduct regular inspections of the premises to identify maintenance needs or safety hazards. Assist with landscaping and outdoor maintenance, including snow shoveling, as required. Respond to requests from staff or congregation members regarding facility needs or issues. Maintain an organized storage area for cleaning supplies and equipment. Experience Previous experience in custodial or maintenance roles is preferred but not required. Familiarity with cleaning products, tools, and safety protocols is a plus. Strong attention to detail and ability to follow instructions effectively. Excellent communication skills to interact with staff and congregation members respectfully. Ability to work independently as well as part of a team.
