Our groundbreaking software empowers devices to synchronize data in real time, using cutting-edge peer-to-peer technology that runs on mobile, web, IoT, and server systems.Role DescriptionWe're seeking an experienced Senior Software Engineer, Bluetooth to own and advance the Bluetooth transport layer that powers Ditto's distributed data platform. You'll be responsible for designing, developing, and optimizing the software that enables reliable, low-latency peer-to-peer communication between devices-even when they're completely offline. Your work will directly impact millions of data sync operations happening across our customers' distributed systems.In this role, you'll tackle the inherent challenges of Bluetooth connectivity-unreliable connections, diverse device behaviors, interference-and build elegant, resilient solutions that make peer-to-peer sync feel magical to end users.What You'll Be Up To...Build and optimize core connectivity featuresDesign and implement robust Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) solutions in C++/C/Kotlin for iOS and Android platforms. You'll handle complex connection states, manage central and peripheral roles, and ensure our Bluetooth stack delivers the low-latency, high-throughput performance our distributed database requires.Extend our protocol capabilitiesImplement new Bluetooth profiles and features that expand Ditto's connectivity options. You'll work on advertising strategies, scanning optimization, and connection management to maximize device discovery and pairing success across diverse environments.Ensure reliability at scaleBuild sophisticated error handling and recovery mechanisms that gracefully manage Bluetooth's inherent unreliability. Your code will need to handle edge cases, interference patterns, and the quirks of thousands of different device models in production.Optimize for the real worldTune performance across multiple dimensions-latency, throughput, connection stability, and power efficiency. You'll profile code, identify bottlenecks, and make architectural decisions that balance competing constraints.Create robust testing infrastructureDevelop automated testing frameworks (primarily Python-based) that validate Bluetooth performance across diverse device types, OS versions, and real-world scenarios. You'll build the tools that give us confidence in every release.Collaborate across the stackWork closely with mobile app developers, platform engineers, and product teams to integrate Bluetooth seamlessly with other transport layers (Wi-Fi Direct, LAN) and ensure a unified sync experience.What Helps You Thrive...7+ years of software engineering experience with at least 3-4 years focused on Bluetooth developmentDeep expertise in Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) protocols, profiles, and the Bluetooth Core SpecificationStrong proficiency in C++/C and experience with mobile development in Kotlin (Android) and/or Swift/Objective-C (iOS)Experience with Rust or strong willingness to learn and work in a Rust environmentProven track record of shipping production Bluetooth features in mobile applicationsExperience debugging complex connectivity issues across diverse device ecosystemsStrong understanding of networking fundamentals, state machines, and asynchronous programmingAbility to write clean, maintainable code with comprehensive test coverageGreat-to-Haves...Production experience with Rust in systems programming or networking contextsExperience with Bluetooth Mesh or other mesh networking protocolsBackground in distributed systems or peer-to-peer networkingFamiliarity with other local transport protocols (Wi-Fi Direct, NFC, etc.)Python scripting for test automation and toolingExperience with performance profiling and optimization on mobile platformsOpen source contributions to Bluetooth-related projectsKnowledge of embedded systems or IoT device developmentThe Benefits of Building with UsWe offer competitive salaries and meaningful equity.
