The Department of Anesthesiology at the University of Virginia invites applications for the position of Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Development.The department is in a phase of significant growth and has approximately 90 faculty, 70 nurse anesthetists, 14 fellows, and 68 anesthesiology residents.In Fiscal Year 2025, the department provided 70,000 anesthetics at 5 sites (Main Operating Room, UVA Outpatient Surgery Center, Surgery Center Riverside, Ivy Orthopedic Institute, and Monroe Digestive Health) with approximately 70 sites staffed per day.The department's research portfolio included approximately 6 million dollars in external funding.The Vice Chair for Faculty Affairs and Development will be a member of the department's executive leadership team and will work closely with the Department Chair and other Vice Chairs on faculty recruitment and retainment, promotion and tenure activities, faculty development, faculty wellness, the department's visiting professor program, community outreach, research, education, fundraising, and other key strategic initiatives.Key Roles and ResponsibilitiesMaintain a thorough understanding of University and School of Medicine faculty policies to provide expert guidance to the Chair and faculty.Lead faculty development initiatives, including tailored mentorship programs for early-career and mid-career faculty.Chair the UVA Department of Anesthesiology Promotion and Tenure Committee.Develop and maintain a robust faculty development program catered to individual academic levels and interestsPartner with the Senior Associate Dean for Faculty Affairs and Faculty Development (SOM) to support, sponsor, and promote faculty in achieving professional success across all academic missions.Partner and collaborate with the Chair, other departmental leaders to recruit and retain a diverse group of talented faculty with a commitment in one or all of our academic missions of clinical care, education, and research.Develop and maintain a comprehensive faculty orientation and onboarding program for new academic anesthesiologistsPartner with the Vice Chair of Clinical operations to develop and maintain the UVA Department of Anesthesiology Faculty Ongoing Professional Practice Evaluation and Focused Professional Practice Evaluation program as required by UVA Credentialing and Joint Commission.Partner with the Chair, School of Medicine and Health System leaders to develop and maintain a comprehensive program and pathway for the management of unprofessional behavior on the part of members of the Department of Anesthesiology.Have primary responsibility for managing the departmental faculty development workshops and faculty development speaker program.Manage the budget specifically allocated to faculty development.Work with the Executive Vice Chair to maintain and optimize academic performance evaluation mechanisms within the department.Develop and maintain a robust 360 degree/peer evaluation system in collaboration with the Chair.Collaborate with the VC for Education on engaging faculty in speaker exchanges with other institutions.Promote and sponsor faculty on the regional and national level for speaking engagements, committees, etc.Promote wellness and sponsor wellness activities within the department.Develop and maintain a mechanism to identify faculty members for nomination to local, regional, and national prestigious awards in anesthesiology and in academic medicine in general.Manage the School of Medicine faculty awards process and help create / optimize submissions for faculty.Serve as a member of the department's compensation committee.Work with the departmental administrative staff to optimize the weekly newsletter sent to faculty.DescriptionThe faculty.QualificationsBoard Certification in Anesthesiology.Eligible for Medical Licensure in Virginia.Eligible for the position of Full Professor in the UVA School of Medicine.Track record of successful mentoring and faculty development activities.Track record of excellence in clinical care and research.Experience with faculty recruiting.Strong organizational skills, interpersonal skills, a track recordof creating positive organizational change, and working collaboratively with others.Problem solving experience in an academic medical center.Experience with the relevant administrative and regulatory issues.Track record of scholarship.Track record of national involvement in anesthesiology societies.Be innovative, forward thinking, and fiscally responsible.Committed to an inclusive
