Radiation Therapist
The Radiation Therapist organizes, plans, and directs high quality and wide-ranging disease appropriate radiotherapy to oncology patients utilizing equipment, computers, and established techniques to ensure a positive patient experience. Demonstrating radiation safety standards with patient and staff members is vital.
Key responsibilities:
Prepare or construct equipment, such as immobilization, treatment, or protection devices
Position patients for simulation and treatment with accuracy, according to prescription
Administer prescribed doses of radiation to specific body parts, using radiation therapy equipment according to established practices and standards
Properly document simulations, treatments and patient care activities in the EMR
Report machine and equipment problems following the established procedure
Review prescription, diagnosis, patient chart, and identification before initiating treatment
Follow principles of radiation protection for patient, self, and others- ALARA
Observe and reassure patients during treatment and report unusual reactions to physician
Check for side effects, such as skin irritation, nausea, or hair loss to assess patient's reaction to treatment; notify appropriate staff (Lead Therapist, Nurse or Physician)
Educate, prepare, and reassure patients and their families by answering questions, providing physical assistance, and emphasizing physician's advice regarding treatment reactions or post-treatment care
Efficiently organize and plan patient schedule(s) to improve resources
Assist with training newly hired Radiation Therapists
Assign alerts, or journal notes using the electronic health record- EMR to communicate
The Radiation Therapist must be able to operate the IX and 23EX radiation therapy machines, VisionRT system and GE CT simulator utilizing the latest treatment techniques including 3D Conformal, IMRT, IGRT, and Brachytherapy
Maintain a productive relationship with the physics and dosimetry departments.
Follow established practice patterns to ensure the timely readiness of treatment plans, including QA for initiating patient treatment and follow-up
Follow the established Machine Problem Reporting process to ensure proper reporting is complete per policy
Reconcile daily treatment counts to the captured daily counts to ensure accuracy and report inaccuracies to the Lead Therapist daily
Understand the possibility for afterhours therapist coverage as allocated
Follow the code of ethics and practice standards set by the ARRT and ASRT
Compliant with all licensure and certification requirements to perform job as required by state law and company policy
Follow established policies and procedures for reporting treatment variances
Reports work related injuries to the supervisor immediately.
Monitors supply levels of department and reports to supervisor before zero inventories
Qualifications:
Graduate of an approved School for Radiation Therapy
ARRT Registered Technologist (T)
State licensed
Must be in good standing with all CE and license requirements.
CPR certified
Excellent communication skills both written and verbal
Computer literate, to include experience with the following:
