Job Description : OTR CDL Class A Truck DriverAn Over-the-Road (OTR) Class A Driver is responsible for transporting freight across long distances, typically crossing state lines and spending several days or weeks away from home. This role requires high endurance, a strong commitment to safety, and the ability to operate heavy tractor-trailer combinations (usually 26,001+ lbs GVW) in various weather and traffic conditions.Key ResponsibilitiesLong-Haul Transport: Safely drive a tractor-trailer to transport goods over long distances, often involving multi-day trips.Safety Inspections: Conduct thorough Pre-Trip, En-Route, and Post-Trip inspections of the vehicle and cargo to ensure mechanical integrity and load security.Compliance: Maintain electronic logging devices (ELD) to track hours of service (HOS), ensuring strict adherence to Department of Transportation (DOT) and Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA) regulations.Cargo Management: Secure cargo using straps, chains, or binders. Verify freight against shipping documents (Bills of Lading) and obtain customer signatures upon delivery.Navigation: Plan the most efficient routes using GPS and atlas tools, adjusting for road closures, height restrictions, and weather conditions.Equipment Maintenance: Perform minor roadside repairs (e.g., changing bulbs or checking tire pressure) and report major mechanical issues to dispatch immediately.Requirements & QualificationsLicense: Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) Class A.Medical: Current DOT Medical Card/Medical Examiner's Certificate.Experience: Most carriers require 6 months to 2 years of verifiable tractor-trailer experience (though some entry-level programs exist).Physical Ability: Able to lift up to 50 lbs, climb in/out of the cab frequently, and handle the physical demands of securing or occasionally unloading freight.Clean Record: A clean Motor Vehicle Record (MVR) with no major violations in the last 3–5 years and the ability to pass a DOT-regulated drug and alcohol screen.Lifestyle Flexibility: Ability to stay on the road for extended periods (typically 2–3 weeks at a time).Compensation & Benefits (2026 Projections)Average Salary: Approximately $78,000 – $82,000 per year, with top earners and specialized haulers reaching $110,000+.Pay Structure: Often paid per mile (CPM), ranging from $0.55 to $0.75+ CPM depending on experience and endorsements.
