The Firefighter/EMT Paramedic is responsible for performing public safety work involving the protection of life and property by engaging in firefighting and providing advanced emergency medical services. The position may also include fire code enforcement, public education, and station and equipment maintenance. Work is performed outdoors in extreme temperatures, inclement weather, and hazardous environments.
The Firefighter/EMT Paramedic must be able to perform the following essential job duties, with or without reasonable accommodation:
In the absence of an officer assume command and make critical decisions pertaining to life safety
Participate in fire suppression activities and respond to fires and other emergencies
Conduct complex fire and rescue operations and aid those in emergencies
Operate emergency apparatus including driving and pumping vehicles and equipment safely and effectively
Direct and participate in delivering emergency medical services up to the EMT-P skill set
Follow policies, procedures, and the instructions of supervisors and provide professional leadership and guidance to all fire personnel
Operate all fire equipment safely, legally, and in compliance with City policies, procedures, and Department Standard Operating Procedures
Participate in daily operations of the Fire Station and ensure readiness for response
Inspect, repair, and maintain equipment and station
Ventilate burning buildings by opening windows and roofs and cutting through floors when needed
Enter data into a personal computer to document incidents and reports
Inspect alarm and fire control systems for compliance with fire code standards and conduct building inspections under the International Fire Code
Use cleaning fluids, chemicals, insecticides, and protective equipment to mitigate hazardous materials incidents
Clean and maintain Fire Department buildings, apparatus, and grounds
Interpret and use specialized testing and reporting procedures
Provide fire safety and prevention education to the public
Perform company-level inspections of buildings and occupancies
Conduct and supervise preplanning of buildings and occupancies
Participate in and document training for Fire Department personnel
Plan and manage assigned projects and inspect job sites for compliance with safety standards
Respond to questions from citizens and agencies
Attend meetings as assigned
Exercise good judgment in decision-making under all circumstances
Assess workload, systems, and reporting needs and identify improvements
Work effectively individually and as part of a team with a helpful, cooperative, and professional attitude
Maintain punctual, regular, on-site attendance
Complete all job duties promptly and accurately whether listed or not in the job description
Safeguard City property and report needed repairs
Work safely, follow safety rules, and maintain a safe working environment
Maintain confidentiality regarding City business
Perform other duties as assigned by Fire Department Officers
Ability to work assigned shifts including weekends, holidays, and overtime
Requirements:
Education and Certifications:
High school graduation or equivalent
Certification as a Basic Firefighter by the Texas Commission on Fire Protection
Certification as EMT-P by the Texas Department of State Health Services
Clear results of background and employment screening checks including physical exam and drug screening
Possession of a Texas Class B driver's license within six months of hire and an acceptable driving record
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
Comprehensive knowledge of department Standard Operating Procedures and Emergency Medical Protocols
Working knowledge of all emergency equipment and ability to operate safely
Ability to lead, motivate, and train other fire personnel
Ability to analyze emergencies and act quickly, calmly, and effectively
Ability to function in high stress emergency environments
Ability to maintain cooperative working relationships with City employees, officials, and external agencies
Knowledge of locally adopted fire and building codes and ability to apply them during inspections
Knowledge of HIPAA laws as they apply to EMS operations
Physical and Mental Requirements:
Administer emergency first aid and provide life support at the BLS or ALS level
Perform searches and rescues in burning or smoke-filled buildings and other hazardous environments
Use firefighting equipment including hoses, axes, pry tools, ladders, and rescue tools
Operate hydraulic or pneumatic rescue equipment and drive emergency vehicles
Distinguish colors for hazardous materials identification
Wear personal protective equipment weighing approximately 70 pounds including SCBA
Lift and carry objects weighing 100 pounds or more with assistance
Work in extreme temperatures, inclement weather, high noise environments, and confined spaces
Detect stimuli such as gas leaks, alarms, building collapse signs, and emergency calls using all senses
Maintain tolerance for trauma-related environments and situations involving severely injured or deceased patients
Sit, stand, walk, bend, push, pull, reach, and remain on duty for extended periods
