Custodial / Handyman
The Custodial / Handyman staff member is responsible for maintaining a clean, safe, organized, and well-functioning school environment. This role supports daily custodial operations, moderate facility repairs, campus setup, safety checks, and general building maintenance. The ideal candidate should have hands-on experience with plumbing, basic electrical work, and HVAC / AC troubleshooting to help ensure the campus remains safe, functional, and ready for students, staff, families, and visitors each day.Essential Duties And ResponsibilitiesCustodial DutiesClean and sanitize classrooms, offices, restrooms, hallways, cafeteria, common areas, and other assigned spacesSweep, mop, vacuum, dust, and disinfect surfaces throughout the campusEmpty trash and recycling bins and replace liners as neededRestock restroom supplies, paper products, soap, and sanitation materialsClean spills and respond promptly to urgent cleaning needsSupport cafeteria and meal service area cleanup as neededAssist with deep cleaning during school breaks, summer cleaning, and special projectsMaintain custodial closets, supplies, and equipment in a clean and organized mannerHandyman / Maintenance DutiesPerform moderate facility repairs, including plumbing repairs, basic electrical work, painting, patching walls, furniture repair, door/lock adjustments, fixture replacement, and general campus maintenanceComplete plumbing-related tasks such as fixing leaks, unclogging drains, repairing toilets, replacing faucets, checking water flow issues, and identifying larger concerns that may require vendor supportPerform basic electrical tasks such as replacing light bulbs, checking breakers, replacing outlet covers, troubleshooting basic electrical issues, and reporting concerns that require a licensed electricianSupport HVAC / AC maintenance by replacing air filters, checking thermostats, identifying AC performance concerns, reporting system issues, and assisting outside HVAC vendors as neededAssemble, move, and repair furniture, shelving, desks, chairs, and school equipmentConduct routine facility checks to identify safety, maintenance, plumbing, electrical, HVAC, or repair concernsReport major maintenance issues, safety hazards, or needed vendor repairs to the supervisor immediatelySupport HVAC, plumbing, electrical, and other vendors when outside contractors are on campusHelp maintain exterior areas, including walkways, entrances, playground areas, and outdoor trash removalCampus Support DutiesAssist with event setup and breakdown, including tables, chairs, decorations, equipment, and signageSupport morning, afternoon, or evening campus operations as assignedHelp prepare classrooms and common areas for testing, meetings, professional development, and school eventsRespond professionally and promptly to staff requests approved by the supervisorFollow all safety procedures, school policies, and confidentiality expectationsMaintain a positive and professional attitude when interacting with students, staff, families, and visitorsQualificationsHigh school diploma or GED preferredPrevious custodial, maintenance, handyman, or facilities experience requiredExperience with plumbing, basic electrical work, and HVAC / AC troubleshooting strongly preferredAbility to perform moderate repairs and use basic hand tools, power tools, and custodial equipment safelyAbility to lift, carry, push, or pull up to 50 poundsAbility to stand, walk, bend, climb, and perform physical tasks for extended periodsMust be dependable, punctual, safety-minded, and able to work independently or as part of a teamMust pass all required background checks and school employment requirementsRequired SkillsStrong attention to detailGood time management and task prioritizationBasic knowledge of plumbing, electrical, HVAC / AC systems, cleaning products, tools, and safety proceduresAbility to troubleshoot facility concerns and determine when an issue should be escalated to a licensed professional or outside vendorAbility to follow written and verbal instructionsProfessional communication and teamworkCommitment to student safety and maintaining a clean learning environmentWork ScheduleThis position may require morning, evening, weekend, or summer work depending on campus needs, school events, deep cleaning schedules, and facility projects.Physical RequirementsThe employee must be able to regularly lift and move supplies, furniture, trash bags, cleaning equipment, and maintenance tools.
