The responsibilities include but are not limited to analyzing, preparing and filing of state documents; gathering and indexing medical records; preparing hearing exhibits and hearing binders; managing Defense Attorney schedules; communicating with clients, opposing counsel, and the Workers' Compensation Board; scheduling depositions; and collecting information from employers, opposing counsel, witnesses and physicians. The Legal Assistant is expected to draft discovery and other legal correspondence.
Responsibilities:
Compiles, analyzes, organizes, and manages documents, including medical records, pleadings, and legal correspondence on behalf of the Defense Attorneys.
Assists with preparation for hearings, depositions, and independent medical examinations, including the assembly of exhibits, indexing of medical records and preparation of a hearing binders for the Defense Attorneys.
Files correspondence, exhibits, briefs, appeals and other legal documents with the Workers' Compensation Board and opposing counsel.
Assists with the preparation and filing of pleadings.
Coordinates the collection, review, and production of discovery requests, including drafting responses.
Acts as a liaison between the Defense Attorney, MEMIC insureds, the Workers' Compensation Board, and opposing counsel for scheduling and sharing of information.
Uses Claims software and databases to ensure appropriate processing of incoming legal mail and assigning appropriate chargebacks on behalf of the Defense Attorneys.
Communicates effectively with clients, witnesses, physician experts, attorneys, and the Workers' Compensation Board to assist Defense Attorneys with legal strategies.
Receives, documents, and distributes subpoenas received by Claims to the appropriate Defense attorney. Prepares the subpoenaed file for review by Defense Attorney. Facilitates response to subpoena under the supervision of Defense Attorney.
Assists in the development of litigation project programs, practices and protocols.
Interacts with State and Federal Boards and Commissions, as appropriate.
Requirements:
Minimum of one year experience working in a legal or claims environment preferred.
Strong attention to detail with the ability to type with speed and accuracy
Proficient in Microsoft Word, Excel and
Must have excellent grammatical as well as written and verbal communication
The ability to multitask is required.
Must be able to work well under pressure and manage tight deadlines.
