Grants and Payroll Accountant- Non-Profit
Position SummaryThe Nonprofit Accountant is responsible for managing the organization's financial operations with a focus on grant accounting, payroll administration, and bank reconciliations. This role ensures accuracy, compliance, and transparency in financial reporting while supporting program and leadership teams in stewarding nonprofit funds responsibly.Key ResponsibilitiesGrant Accounting & ComplianceTrack and manage restricted and unrestricted grant fundingSet up grant budgets in the accounting system and monitor expendituresEnsure grant expenses comply with funder requirements and organizational policiesPrepare financial reports for grantors, including budget vs. actual reportsAssist with grant audits, monitoring visits, and financial reviewsCollaborate with program staff to ensure proper allocation of costsBank Reconciliation & Cash ManagementPerform monthly bank and credit card reconciliationsInvestigate and resolve discrepancies promptlyMonitor cash flow and assist with cash forecastingMaintain accurate records of deposits, transfers, and disbursementsGeneral Accounting & Financial SupportMaintain accurate general ledger entriesPrepare monthly and year-end closing activitiesAssist with financial statements and internal reportsSupport annual audits and preparation of schedulesEnsure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards (GAAP, fund accounting)Maintain organized and audit-ready financial recordsReconcile payroll reports to the general ledgerManage payroll-related journal entries and accrualsCoordinate benefits deductions and payroll changesOther tasks as provided by supervisorQualificationsRequiredBachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field3+ years of accounting experience, preferably in a nonprofit environmentExperience with grant accounting and fund accountingPayroll processing experienceStrong reconciliation and analytical skillsProficiency with accounting software (e.g., Fund EZ)Advanced Excel skills and Google suitePreferredExperience working with government or foundation grantsKnowledge of nonprofit compliance and reporting requirementsExperience supporting auditsSkills & CompetenciesStrong attention to detail and accuracyAbility to manage multiple deadlinesClear written and verbal communication skillsCollaborative and service-oriented mindsetHigh level of integrity and confidentialityWork EnvironmentHybrid (3 days in the Hauppauge Office and 2 days remote)Reports to the Finance DirectorThe Retreat is an Equal Opportunity EmployerTHE RETREAT, INC.
