TCUP Technology Project Engineer (Electrical Assistant Engineer) – Administration Division – SF Municipal Transportation Agency (5203) The San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is responsible for managing all ground transportation in the City. The TCUP Project upgrades the technology used to manage light rail operations, replacing the existing train control system with a state‑of‑the‑art radio‑based technology. Position Description Under the direction of the TCUP Technology Project Manager, the Assistant Engineer supports systems engineering and communications integration activities for the Train Control Upgrade Project. Responsibilities include reviewing and evaluating technical submittals, integrating CBTC with related technologies, developing electrical drawings and plans, providing field support during construction, testing, and commissioning, and contributing to installation, integration, and test plans. Examples of Important and Essential Duties Provide engineering support to the Train Control Upgrade Project delivering CBTC technology. Organize and lead technical meetings to identify, analyze, and resolve engineering issues. Review vendor submissions of plans, technical documents, and reports to support SFMTA design reviews. Work with vendors, transit staff, and consultants to design integrations. Generate drawings, plans, guides, manuals, as‑built drawings. Develop root‑cause analyses and corrective action reports. Witness post‑installation tests and perform QA/QC tasks. Plan and execute field tests to validate vendor functionality and system interfaces. Monitor network performance for compliance with contract specifications. Communicate findings and recommended solutions to management. Identify, track, and catalog defects and bugs; maintain traceability. Conduct periodic field visits to gather data for designs and drafts. Perform routine field inspections to ensure conformance with plans and codes. Perform data entry and formatting tasks to support the project. Perform other related duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Possession of a baccalaureate degree or graduate degree in Electrical Engineering. One year of verifiable professional engineering experience performing at least three of the following tasks: preparing or assisting in studies, designs, drawings, sketches, and plans; collecting data and site visits; preparing contract specifications and cost estimates; preparing reports; conducting data analysis; conducting routine field inspections. Possession of a valid Engineer‑in‑Training (EIT) certificate issued by NCEES. Alternatively, possession of a Professional Engineer (PE) license in Electrical Engineering from the California Board of Professional Engineers, Land Surveyors and Geologists. Desirable Qualifications Master’s degree in Electrical Engineering or related field. Knowledge of systems engineering concepts. Exposure to CBTC, rail transit, signaling, or telecommunications systems. Experience with computer networks and communication systems. Experience with packet‑based networks and human‑machine interfaces. Field engineering or testing experience. Experience as a contractor or employee of a public transit agency. Technical writing and editing experience. Experience preparing engineering cost estimates. Proficiency with AutoCAD and drafting tools. Experience with project management software (P6 Primavera, Microsoft Project). Experience working with system engineers, project managers, operations, and regulatory bodies. Proficiency with Microsoft Office products such as Excel, Visio, Outlook, and Word. Experience interpreting telematics data using Python, SQL, Tableau, or similar tools. Ability to work well with a diverse, multi‑disciplinary workforce.
