Department: Public WorksAbout Our JobThis position involves professional and technical work related to the operation of the Traffic Management Center, support of the County's Advanced Traffic Management System (ATMS) and Intelligent Transportation System (ITS), traffic signal operations projects, studies and other assigned technical projects. The role assists and coordinates with the Traffic Management Center and field staff regarding any changes, problems, or plans involving signal control timing.We seek a candidate who can help create excellent experiences for residents and visitors in Sarasota.Job DescriptionOperate the Traffic Management Center on a daily basis and train engineering staff.Adjust traffic signal systems remotely to address traffic incidents, accidents, peak congestion, and lane/road closures.Maintain, modify, and implement Diversion and Evacuation Routes Timing Plans.Coordinate with the State and Regional Traffic Management Centers and other stakeholders on regional traffic management matters.Provide engineering support to the signal shop, coordinate maintenance, upgrade, and continuous operation of traffic systems with field maintenance staff.Support the ATMS team, train engineering staff, and provide professional and technical work on engineering projects, studies and other assignments.Design and prepare quarterly arterial performance reports using traffic data from ITS devices.Design signal timing using Synchro and SIM traffic software.Research, test, and implement new technologies to support the County's ATMS.Plan and implement equipment and protocols in preparation for connected and autonomous vehicle (AV/CV) technologies.Review construction plans impacting operations referred by Land Development Services and Capital Projects.Review Temporary Traffic Control (MOT) plans and adjust signal systems remotely to support lane and road closures.Represent Transportation at community meetings regarding traffic issues.Perform final roadway field inspections for acceptance by Public Works for maintenance.Investigate customer concerns/inquiries; meet with citizens to define and resolve issues.Prepare and report transportation studies, including traffic and roadway analysis.Ensure Rapid Rectangular Flashing Beacons (RRFBs) operate in compliance with the latest MUTCD and FHWA standards.Work HoursMonday – Friday, 8:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.About YouMinimum QualificationsMinimum of four (4) years of experience in civil engineering or infrastructure construction/inspection, or a Bachelor's Degree in Engineering and experience in a related field.Master's Degree in Engineering may substitute for one year of required experience.Must be a licensed Professional Engineer (P.E.) in Florida, or be able to obtain licensure within 12 months of hire.Preferred QualificationsExperience with traffic or ATMS related projects and technology.Experience with ATMS.now, Synchro, and Tru-Traffic.Advanced Maintenance of Traffic (MOT) certification.Knowledge of asset management software.Knowledge of ATMS or AV/CV technology.Knowledge of signal cabinet/controller.Job-Based Competencies: Microsoft Office Suite (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook); Synchro, SIM Traffic, Tru-Traffic, SIDRAW, and ATMS.now is desired.
