Assistant Controller
The CompanyOur client is a technology-driven energy company focused on optimizing renewable energy and grid-scale battery operations through advanced data analytics and machine learning.Role OverviewThe Assistant Controller will oversee the accounting operations for the company’s retail business, ensuring accurate financial reporting and maintaining the integrity of accounting records. This role is responsible for supporting the preparation of daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial statements and reports. The ideal candidate is highly organized, detail-oriented, quick to learn new systems, and comfortable working independently in a fast-paced, high-growth environment. Experience with ERP systems, vendor management platforms, and Microsoft Office is essential, along with the ability to manage multiple priorities effectively.Duties & ResponsibilitiesMaintain accurate accounting records and prepare daily, monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the retail business using the company’s ERP systemSupport retail operations by processing customer payments, tracking revenue activity, and contributing to monthly profit and loss reportingReconcile payroll, employee benefits, and related accounting entries in coordination with payroll and PEO platformsReview and reconcile accounts receivable and accounts payable balances, identify discrepancies, and help improve accounting workflowsProcess vendor invoices and oversee timely supplier payments through the company’s payment platformCalculate, reconcile, and distribute broker commission paymentsTrack and reconcile energy trading activity, ensuring accurate financial recording from contract execution through settlementMaintain accounting policies, financial documentation, and supporting records for audits, tax compliance, and regulatory reportingRecord customer and vendor account adjustments, write-offs, and other accounting entries while ensuring accurate financial reportingPerform cash reconciliations and verify payment activity against supporting transaction data. Coordinate sales tax, utility-related fees, and other regulatory filings and payments across multiple jurisdictionsAssist with cash flow forecasting by preparing analyses of actual and projected cash activitySupport annual tax reporting requirements, including preparation of vendor information returns. Assist with recording tax-related liabilities and other general accounting entriesPartner with cross-functional teams to ensure accurate processing of customer receipts and vendor disbursementsContribute to special projects and other accounting initiatives as needed.QualificationsBachelor’s degree in accounting, Finance, or a related field; CPA designation is preferred but not requiredAt least 8 years of accounting experience, with experience in the retail energy sectorProficiency with Microsoft Excel and PowerPointExperience working with ERP platforms and financial systems (e.g., QuickBooks Online, NetSuite) as well as accounts payable and expense management toolsSolid understanding of U.S. GAAP and core accounting principlesFamiliarity with financial reporting requirements and knowledge of tax or industry regulations is a plusStrong analytical thinking and problem-solving abilitiesExcellent organizational skills with exceptional attention to detailAbility to manage multiple priorities and meet deadlines in a fast-paced environmentStrong written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to collaborate effectively across teamsDemonstrated ability to quickly learn new systems, processes, and technologiesHighly motivated, dependable, and able to work independently with sound professional judgmentProject management experience is beneficial but not requiredAbility to work in Cupertino, CA or Houston, TX (3 days in office per week)
