General Machinist

Position Summary This is an apprentice level position. Working under the supervision of the Manufacturing Lead and/or the Manufacturing Supervisor, the General Machinist II sets up and operates machine tools and fits and assembles parts to make or repair metal parts, mechanisms, tools or machines. The General Machinist II works to the dimensions and tolerance of the piece to be machined and the sequence of operations and machines required by studying specifications such as blueprints, sketches, damaged parts or a description of parts. The General Machinist II plans and executes assignments using machine tools including boring tools, calipers, drilling machines, grinding machines, lathes, milling cutters, and workshop presses. Essential Job Duties 1. Read and interpret engineering drawings, blueprints, charts and tables or study sample parts 2. Work to dimensions and tolerances provided by blueprints 3. Set up, operate and maintain a variety of machine tools including computer numerically controlled (CNC) tools to perform precision 4. Fit and assemble machined metal parts and subassemblies using hand and power tools 5. Verify dimensions of products for accuracy and conformance to specifications using precision measuring instruments 6. Align and secure holding fixtures, cutting tools, attachments, accessories, and materials onto machines 7. Monitor the feed and speed of machines during the machining process 8. Edit programs as needed / Write short programs as needed 9. Observe and listen to operating machines or equipment to diagnose machine malfunctions and to determine needs for adjustments or repairs 10. Separate scrap waste and related materials for reuse, recycling, or disposal 11. Scan all jobs through the Made2Manage (M2M) system Other Duties 1. Report deviations from specifications and tolerances to supervisor 2. Maintain inspection records and complete inspection reports 3. Perform other related duties as assigned Qualifications 1. High school diploma or equivalent required 2. One year of machine shop experience required 3. Completion of a technical trade school, or the equivalent of education and experience, or trade certification for general Machinist is preferred 4. Ability to complete a technical trade school apprentice program within four years is required 5. Ability to use measuring devices to verify that work meets blueprint specifications 6. Basic shop math skills including knowledge of arithmetic, algebra, geometry, trigonometry and their application is required 7. Able to edit programs 8. Able to write short programs 9. Ability to communicate clearly 10. Possess effective organization and time management skills, be detail oriented, use good judgment, and manage competing priorities for multiple projects and consistently meet all deadlines Personal Qualities 1.
