Automotive Mechanic

Startle is seeking a dependable, detail-oriented Fleet Mechanic to keep our rental vehicles safe, reliable, and ready to rent. This role focuses on preventive maintenance, inspections, quick-turn repairs, and tight quality control. You’ll work closely with operations to prioritize vehicles that need to get back on the road fast—without shortcuts. Key Responsibilities Safety & Quality Perform safety inspections (pre-rent and post-rent) and document results. Ensure wheel/tire work is completed to spec (torque procedures, re-checks, test drives as needed). Identify and report safety-critical issues immediately (brakes, steering, suspension, tires, leaks). Maintenance & Repairs Preventive maintenance: oil changes, filters, fluids, batteries, brakes, tire rotations, belts, minor cooling system work. Diagnose and repair common issues: brake noise/pulsation, vibration, steering/suspension wear, starting/charging, overheating, warning lights. Basic diagnostics using scan tools (OBD-II), interpret codes, and confirm fixes. Fleet Operations Support Prioritize work based on vehicle availability needs and urgency. Communicate clearly with management about timelines, parts needs, and repair recommendations. Maintain clean, organized work areas and proper tool/parts handling. Documentation Log work completed (what was done, parts used, time spent, notes on vehicle condition). Note recurring issues and help improve the fleet maintenance schedule. Track mileage-based service intervals and inspection cadence. Required Qualifications 3+ years of hands-on automotive repair experience (fleet, dealership, or independent shop). Strong ability to perform brake jobs, suspension work, and routine maintenance correctly and efficiently. Comfortable using a scan tool and basic diagnostic workflow. Valid driver’s license and ability to test drive vehicles. Reliable attendance and a safety-first mindset. Preferred Qualifications ASE certifications (or working toward them). Fleet/rental experience (high-turnover vehicles, fast inspections, standardized processes). Experience with Toyota/Lexus hybrids (Prius/RAV4/NX-type platforms). Able to source parts and compare options (quality vs price vs speed). Must-Have Behaviors (How We Work) No shortcuts on safety. Torque specs, double-checks, and accountability are mandatory. Communicate early. If something is delayed or unsafe, flag it immediately. Clean work. No loose fasteners, no “good enough,” no missing clips/hardware. Own the result. If you touched it, you verify it. Physical / Work Environment Standing, lifting, bending, and working under vehicles. Lift use, impact tools, hand tools, and diagnostic equipment. Exposure to typical shop conditions (noise, chemicals, oils). Job Types: Full-time, Part-time Pay: $20.00 - $35.00 per hour Expected hours: 20 – 50 per week Work Location: In person
