Work Schedule:
Afternoons, approximately 15 hours per week
Compensation:
$20 per hour
Organization and Program Summary: The Book Works Project, a nonprofit organization founded in 2009 as Emerging Workforce Initiative, supports young people (age 12 to 21 years) experiencing educational disruptions due to academic skills gaps, childhood trauma, racial or social discrimination, economic hardship and related challenges. Services include school-time programs for middle and high school students during suspensions or gaps in enrollment, education advocacy, and social-emotional and academic skills development.
Purpose of the Position: Academic Tutors assist students one-on-one and in small groups to develop reading, writing, and digital literacy related skills. Hours will be set according to Engagement Hub hours as well as the scheduling needs of students.
Primary Tasks: An integral part of The Book Works team, Academic Tutors:
Work with middle and high school-age youth (12- to 21-year-olds) to identify and reach academic goals.
Tutor in small groups at The Book Works offices, Education Engagement Hubs, or other community spaces.
Maintain a consistent schedule with specific students.
Coordinate with the student's Education Advocate and other professional supports to help students meet all academic goals.
Maintain detailed and accurate learner files, ensuring confidentiality and compliance with all relevant regulations.
Required Knowledge and Skills
Teaching experience in literacy or math.
Experience working effectively with youth from diverse and traditionally underserved populations including students of color, low-income students, or students with disabilities.
Experience working with multilingual learners.
Excellent skills in communication, problem solving, and prioritizing daily tasks. Must have demonstrated the ability to adjust to new and unexpected priorities professionally.
Preferred: working toward or completed a degree in education.
Note: Reliable transportation is preferred. Mileage between worksites is reimbursed.
