In this role, you will own the people, processes, and equipment that keep our aerospace environmental test production running at peak performance. You will lead a team of engineers, setting the technical direction and operational strategy for environmental testing of satellite hardware. You will be responsible for building and developing a high-performing engineering team while also rolling up your sleeves to solve complex technical challenges alongside them.You should be comfortable with a high degree of ambiguity and relish the idea of solving problems that haven't been solved at scale before. Along the way, we guarantee that you will learn a lot, have fun, and make a positive impact on tens of millions of people.Key job responsibilitiesPeople Management & Team LeadershipDirectly manage a team of Engineers supporting aerospace environmental test productionHire, develop, and retain top engineering talent; conduct performance reviews and support career growthSet clear goals and priorities for the team; foster a culture of ownership, safety, and continuous improvementServe as an escalation point for technical issues and unblock the engineering team during daily test operationsTechnical Leadership & OperationsOwn the strategy and execution for aerospace environmental test production (thermal, TVAC, HASS) in compliance with applicable standards including MIL-STD-810, SMC-S-016, and MIL-STD-1540Serve as the primary technical authority for automated test equipment (test chambers and test sets): maintenance, calibration, troubleshooting, bring-up, and commissioning of new equipmentTroubleshoot and identify root causes of issues in test processes; implement corrective actions to prevent recurrencePartner with IT Infrastructure professionals to resolve networking and communication issues with test equipmentEstablish and continuously improve environmental test processes to maximize output and enable rapid transition from engineering development to rate productionProcess Development & Operational ExcellenceIdentify improvement opportunities and execute initiatives to ensure product quality, reduce lead time, and increase productivityEnable production test autonomy by challenging requirements, simplifying work procedures, and automating actionsParticipate in lean manufacturing improvement efforts and drive operational excellence initiativesEstablish and maintain calibration procedures and visual management of production tooling and equipmentCross-Functional Partnership* Partner with cross-functional teams including electrical engineering, RF engineering, mechanical engineering, thermal engineering, software, reliability, maintenance, quality, and program management* Represent the Environmental Test Lab in program reviews, roadmap planning, and resource discussions with senior leadershipA day in the lifeAs the Engineering Manager of the Environmental Test Lab, you will balance people leadership with hands-on technical engagement. Your days will include coaching and developing your engineering team, reviewing test rack readiness and calibration status, and engaging directly with cross-functional partners to align on priorities. You will be the go-to engineering leader when production issues arise - driving rapid root cause analysis and corrective action. You will also spend time building the team's long-term capabilities: hiring great engineers, developing processes that scale, and investing in automation that reduces manual burden on your team.Basic Qualifications3+ years of engineering team management experience2+ years of project management (including scope, schedule, budget, quality, risk and critical path management) experienceExperience using common electronics test equipment (oscilloscopes, power supplies, function generators, etc)Experience in root cause analysis and troubleshooting or problem solvingBachelor's degree in Electrical Engineering, Aerospace Engineering, Computer Science, Computer Engineering, or related field3+ years in a hands-on hardware testing environment (Space / Aerospace / Military / Automotive / Consumer Electronics)2+ years hands-on experience developing and executing test plans for complex aerospace, automotive, or consumer electronics systems1+ years working with Data Acquisition systems and data analysis of environmental testing resultsPreferred Qualifications6+ years in a Space / Aerospace / Military / Automotive hardware testing environment (thermal, TVAC, HASS, acoustic) in compliance with MIL-STD-810, SMC-S-016, or MIL-STD-15401+ years of scripting or programming experience in at least one modern language (C++, C#, Java, Python, LabVIEW) for troubleshooting automated test scriptsExperience commissioning and troubleshooting automated test equipmentExperience in IT Infrastructure and System Administration as related to setting up automated environmental testing equipmentExperience developing production processes and associated test support equipmentExperience developing hardware testing proceduresDemonstrated ability to scale production rate capabilityStrong verbal and written communication skills with ability to effectively communicate across multiple teams and with senior leadershipAbility to work in a fast-paced environment, multitask, and remain comfortable with changing prioritiesAmazon is an equal opportunity employer and does not discriminate on the basis of protected veteran status, disability, or other legally protected status.Our inclusive culture empowers Amazonians to deliver the best results for our customers. Your Amazon package will include sign-on payments and restricted stock units (RSUs). Final compensation will be determined based on factors including experience, qualifications, and location.
