Mechanic Assistant

Job Summary The Mechanic Assistant supports the maintenance and repair of the organization’s vehicles, facilities and equipment to ensure safe, reliable, and efficient transportation services. This position assists mechanics and facilities maintenance team with inspections, preventative maintenance, and repairs while maintaining a clean, organized, and safe work environment. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and eager to learn vehicle maintenance procedures within a team-focused environment Responsibilities Assist mechanics with routine maintenance, inspections, and minor repairs on buses, vans, and service vehicles. Remove and replace vaults in buses returning from routes daily. Check and maintain fluid levels, tires, lights, and other essential vehicle components. Perform oil changes, filter replacements, lubrication, and other basic services as directed. Help diagnose, troubleshoot and report mechanical issues under supervision. Prepare vehicles for inspection, cleaning, and testing after maintenance. Keep maintenance bays, tools, and equipment clean, organized, and in safe working condition. Maintain inventory of parts, fluids, and supplies; track usage (as required), report shortages or needed orders. Assist with proper disposal and clean up of waste materials (oil, filters, tires, etc.) in compliance with environmental and safety standards. Operate tools, lifts, and equipment safely following shop procedures and training. Minimum Qualifications Education and Experience: High school diploma or GED required. Requires two years of related experience. Valid driver’s license required; CDL or ability to obtain CDL preferred. Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities: Basic understanding of vehicle systems and maintenance procedures. Ability to use hand and power tools safely. Strong attention to detail and commitment to quality work.
