Ruby on Rails Engineer

Location : San Francisco, CA (Remote) Work Schedule : M-F 8 am - 5 pm PST (must be available during core collaboration hours) Compensation : $54-$76/hour Position Summary: We are seeking a talented Ruby on Rails Engineer for a contract role supporting a client-facing Tax Benefits product. This remote opportunity offers an engaging environment where you'll contribute to all phases of the product lifecycle—from prototyping and feature development to operating scalable technical systems. Collaborating within an agile team, you'll help enhance user experiences and ensure reliable delivery of vital features. This role is suited for an experienced full-stack engineer with a passion for building accessible, high-quality web applications. Key Responsibilities: Develop, test, and deploy high-quality features for a government-focused tax benefits platform using Ruby on Rails and modern web technologies. Debug, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues efficiently, gaining versatility across multiple tech systems. Write automated tests, implement monitoring solutions, and ensure high service reliability. Collaborate closely with product managers, designers, and researchers to translate user feedback into tangible features. Design scalable, maintainable solutions that prioritize clean code and best practices. Break down tasks, estimate effort, and prioritize work effectively within an agile environment. Mentor junior team members and share knowledge to foster team growth. Stay current with industry best practices around web accessibility (WCAG 2.2 or similar) and modern development workflows. Required Qualifications: 5+ years of professional experience as a full-stack software engineer. 2+ years of hands-on experience with Ruby on Rails. 2+ years of experience managing AWS infrastructure and tooling. 2+ years working within Agile and Scrum methodologies, including pair programming, scoping, and estimating. Strong proficiency with modern web development tools and practices, including GitHub, CI/CD, TDD, and web accessibility standards. Ability to work independently with minimal guidance and deliver high-quality solutions on time. Preferred Skills & Experience: Experience with TDD and automated testing frameworks. Knowledge of GitHub best practices and CI/CD pipelines. Familiarity with web accessibility (WCAG 2.2 or similar). Strong communication skills and the ability to mentor others.
