The Role
We are seeking an Associate Attorney to join our special education practice. This attorney will independently manage a caseload of special education matters, represent parents in impartial hearing proceedings, and work closely with firm leadership on case strategy, client intake, and litigation planning.
This role is well-suited for an attorney who is comfortable running matters from intake through resolution, enjoys client interaction, and is looking for meaningful responsibility within a collaborative, flexible environment.
The position may be based in New York City (hybrid) or fully remote , at the candidate's preference.
Key Responsibilities
Managing a caseload of special education matters from intake through resolution
Advising and representing parents of children with disabilities in
Impartial hearing administrative proceedings
Appeals to the New York State Education Department Office of State Review
Conducting client intakes and initial consultations, including assessing the merits of potential claims
Drafting pleadings, due process complaints, witness affidavits, direct and cross-examination outlines, opening statements, and closing briefs
Representing clients at impartial hearings, including examining witnesses and presenting evidence
Negotiating settlements and drafting stipulations of settlement
Conducting legal research and preparing written advocacy at all stages of a matter
Participating in IEP meetings and related school-based proceedings, as appropriate
Supervising and working closely with paralegals and support staff on assigned matters, including:
Guiding document collection and case preparation
Reviewing and delegating pre- and post-hearing tasks
Coordinating with relevant Department of Education offices to ensure implementation of interim orders, hearing decisions, and settlements
Maintaining accurate and timely case notes, time records, and client communications in the firm's case management systems
Contributing ideas for process improvements, efficiencies, and best practices within the practice
Qualifications
Required
Admission to the New York State Bar (or eligibility for prompt admission)
Litigation experience, including managing matters through all stages of the litigation process
Strong interest in special education law and advocacy for students with disabilities
Excellent written and oral communication skills
Strong organizational skills and ability to manage multiple deadlines independently
Comfort working directly with clients and handling sensitive, high-stakes matters
Preferred
Prior experience in special education and/or disability law
Experience handling impartial hearings and administrative proceedings
Experience working with diverse client populations
Fluency in Spanish or another language commonly spoken in New York City (not required)
Work Environment & Expectations
Hybrid (NYC) or fully remote work arrangements available
Professional, client-facing role with occasional evening or weekend work as required by case needs
High degree of autonomy, paired with close collaboration with firm leadership
Emphasis on quality advocacy, responsiveness, and follow-through
The compensation range for this position is $110,000 – $130,000, commensurate with experience and qualifications. Benefits and additional details will be discussed during the interview process.
