Administration - Metallurgist

Central Steel and Wire Company, a leading distributor and processor of metals with years of history, is seeking a Metallurgist to join our team in Portage, Indiana. CS&W sells and processes over 70,000 metal products, providing customized metal solutions to our customers. The Metallurgist will work to ensure the overall quality of materials sold and processes by Central Steel meet all customer specifications. Metallurgist will support and promote plant wide continuous improvement efforts by providing technical services and expertise with material properties and customer requirements. Metallurgist Responsibilities/Duties: Provide technical assistance to customers, suppliers, and plant personal by telephone, email, and on-site visits. Assistance would include product knowledge, assistance in interpreting material specifications, providing information on fabrication/processing characteristics of various metal grades Provide technical support to Inside Sales and Outside Sales groups. This support would also include product knowledge training in the form of small group meetings as well as one-on-one Monitor all technical material requirements for C.C.P. This would include the review and disposition of all mechanical test results Perform in-house testing and coordinate all Independent Lab testing of samples submitted by customers when material complaints or requests for assistance arise Assist the test report team regarding the generation of Customer Test Reports Assist with responses to customer requests for compliance to several government and environmental regulations such as Nafta, DFARS, Ro-HS, REACH, LEED, etc. Provide assistance and guidance to plant warehouse supervision and Quality Assurance Department in the development and support of the ISO 9001:2015 Quality Management System as necessary Requirements: Bachelor’s Degree in metallurgical engineering, material science or equivalent preferred Minimum of 3-5 years in the application of metallurgical skills Able to work as a member of a cohesive team Knowledge of inspection and control methods, techniques and documentation Excellent communication skills (written and verbal) Strong computer skills including QA applications, word processing, spreadsheets and databases Working knowledge of SAP Employment in any one of the following metals industries: 1. Steel 2. Stainless Steel 3. Aluminum 4. Brass/Copper 5. Metals Service Center Industry Provision of Technical Service to Customers in any of the metal’s fields listed above. This technical service would include answering materials properties questions, assistance in materials selection, assistance regarding the manufacturing and fabrication properties of metal grades, processing customer complaints/rejections. Ability and experience in the interpretation of metals materials specifications. Examples are as follows: 1. ASTM 2. SAE 3. AMS 4. ASME 5. Federal/Military 6. Large Company Specifications (CAT, DEERE, etc.) The successful candidate for this position must possess strong letter writing skills and have excellent communication skills with Customers, Inside Sales, Outside Sales, and Executive Management within company.
