Nurse AssistantUnder the direction and supervision of the responsible Registered Nurse (RN), performs specific patient care duties to meet safety and comfort needs of the patient. Provides input to assist the RN in planning and implementing patient care. Responds to emergent situations according to established procedures. Recognizes and participates in own continuing education. The Nurse Assistant follows the Henry Ford Health System Team Member Standards of Excellence in all interactions.Patient Care ActivitiesHygiene:Provides a clean, comfortable and safe patient environmentBathsOral CareHair CareGrooming and shavingLinen changesSkin care as directedElimination:Assists with elimination needsAdministers enemas (non-medicated)Empties and changes ostomy bags on patients with healed stomasPerforms perineal care and incontinence careChanges diapersEmpties urinary catheter as directedApplies and empties fecal containment devices, per business unit processApplies condom cathetersVital Measurements:Temperature, pulse and respirationBlood PressureIntake & OutputPulse OximetryHeight and weightPresence of pain per business unit processCollects Specimens (per business unit process):VenipunctureBlood GlucometerUrineStoolSputumNasogastric SecretionsFood and Nutrition:Feeds patientsDocuments food intakePrepares full strength tube feeding under the supervision of the RN: fills and labels the feed bag; does not connect tube feeding, perform placement checks or do residual checks.Activity/Exercise (as directed):Ambulates patientsTurns and positions patients in a comfortable positionTransfers patients from bed to chair and bed to stretcherAssists in transportation of patients from department to department as directedSafety:Cares for patients in isolationReports patient findings and observations to the RNReports abnormal findingsAssists the Unit Care team in all emergency situationsReapplies restraints per the direction of the RN and completes safety checksOther Tasks (under direction of RN and per business unit process) :EKGPlaces telemetry leadsApplies heat and cold, antiembolic devices, and sequential compression devices per direction of the RNChanges non sterile dressings under the direction of the RNPost mortem carePrepares room for admissionAssists in patient discharge as directedParticipates in the care of patient belongingsCommunication :Maintains patient privacy and confidentialityAnswers call lightsGreets patients and visitorsInforms the patient of what they are going to do for the patientObtains report form the RN and gives report to the RNObtains help for the patient and reports patient complaints promptlyAssists in collection of information upon directionManagement of Supplies and Materials:Assures that supplies are availableStocks materials to areas identified by the unitAssures that equipment is functioning properlyAssures that equipment is clean and stored in the correct place.Education/Experience Required:High school diploma or G.E.D. equivalent.Completion of a Nurse Assistant program with or without experience in the Nurse Assistant role or Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA-preferred) with or without experience in the Nurse Assistant role OR currently enrolled in a nursing program and have successfully completed the Fundamentals of Nursing course or foreign trained and licensed RN who has relocated to the United States and does not hold a Michigan RN license.Certifications/Licensures Required:Certified Nurse Assistant (CNA) preferred or are currently enrolled in a nursing program and have successfully completed Fundamentals of Nursing or successfully completed the Henry Ford Health System Nurse Assistant Program.Complete BLS Heartsaver Certification during orientation.
