Practice Group Manager, LA Litigation

The firm's work is distinguished by a unique combination of precision and vision.Based in Los Angeles, the Practice Group Manager ("PGM") for LA Litigation is a strategic leader responsible for driving the success of Gibson Dunn's Los Angeles Litigation practice. This role blends business operations, client development, talent management, and cross-functional collaboration to advance the group's market position and operational excellence. The PGM partners closely with LA Litigation partners, the Director, Practice Management US Litigation, and other Practice Group Managers to deliver innovative solutions tailored to the dynamic LA legal market.The role will be a key part of the firm's staff function and will join a growing team collectively responsible for supporting practice leaders in the management of their groups including Professional Development, Marketing & Client Development, Knowledge Management, Communications, Recruiting, Diversity, Career and Alumni Services, Technology, Human Resources, and Office Administration.Communication, leadership, and emotional intelligence are important skills needed in this role along with an understanding of the life cycle of a case and how attorneys practice in a law firm setting.This role reports to the Firm's Director of Practice Management, US Litigation, will take daily direction from the Partners In Charge of the LA Litigation Office and will work closely with the Firm's other Practice Group Managers.Responsibilities include:Strategic Planning & Market DevelopmentDevelop and execute a practice management strategy that reflects the competitive landscape and client expectations unique to LA Litigation.Analyze local market trends, emerging litigation areas (e.g., entertainment, technology, real estate, complex commercial disputes), and regulatory developments to inform group priorities.Collaborate with partners to identify and pursue high-value opportunities, including lateral hires, new client segments, and cross-practice synergies.Client Development & Revenue GrowthEstablish and support partner-led revenue growth initiatives tailored to the LA Litigation market.Lead initiatives to deepen relationships with key LA clients, including Fortune 500 companies, entertainment studios, tech firms, and high-net-worth individuals.Coordinate client pursuit teams and cross-selling efforts across the LA office and other Gibson Dunn practices.Oversee client appreciation programs, thought leadership campaigns, and strategic sponsorships relevant to the LA market.Develop and manage client appreciation programs to strengthen relationships and enhance loyalty.Track and analyze practice-specific data (pitches, targets, client outreach, staffing) to inform business development and growth strategies.Partner with marketing, business development, and communications teams to support:Rankings and awards submissionsClient updates and outreachEngagement with litigation fundersIdentification of growth opportunities within existing client relationshipsPractice Operations & Project ManagementEnsure efficient administration of LA Litigation matters, including resource allocation, project management, and process improvement.Develop agendas and drive follow-up for regular partner and practice group meetings, focusing on accountability and strategic alignment.Partner with LPM to implement best practices for matter management, billing, and client service tailored to LA Litigation's workflow.Identify opportunities for process improvement and lead execution of enhancements.Collaborate with business support departments to manage initiatives and support practice group strategies.Profile Building & Thought LeadershipPartner with communications to elevate the visibility of LA Litigation lawyers through publications, speaking engagements, participation in high-profile industry events (e.g., LA legal conferences, entertainment law panels) and engaging with clients and academic institutions on legal education and training initiativesWork with Marketing to maintain up-to-date attorney bios and facilitate recognition opportunities in relevant LA and national outlets.Talent & Professional DevelopmentSupport the free market staffing system, helping LA Litigation lawyers identify optimal assignments and growth opportunities.Collaborate with leadership on recruiting, onboarding, and retention strategies for top litigation talent in LA.Work with PD to coordinate internal training, CLE programming, and mentorship initiatives focused on litigation skills and LA-specific legal issues.Work with office and practice group leadership to manage talent across the groups, including through regular assessments of the firm's recruiting and senior talent pipelines, in coordination with HR performance development plans and the attorney review teams.Support pipeline development and productivity goals across Los Angeles.Partner with diversity and inclusion teams to support and promote D&I initiatives.Cross-Functional CollaborationServe as a connector between LA Litigation and other Gibson Dunn offices, ensuring integration of firm-wide initiatives and sharing of best practices.Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation, and continuous improvement within the LA Litigation team.Serve as an information conduit to support cross-departmental and cross-office initiatives and projects with a focus on increasing integration across offices in Los Angeles and the wider network.Maintain strong connectivity between Los Angeles efforts and global firm priorities.Work collaboratively with peers across departments to implement initiatives and support business strategies.Support initiatives and projects in collaboration with professional development, marketing, HR, and other firm departments in connection with diversity, equity, and inclusion.QualificationsDeep understanding of the LA legal market, litigation trends, and client
