Wildland Firefighter Medford OR Base
Wildland Firefighter/ Forest TechnicianBe physically and mentally prepared to safely perform general forestry projects, wildland fire suppression and other emergency services as an integral part of a team that will endure long hours in adverse conditions. Work can be performed anywhere in the United States. Key character traits for this position include alertness, teamwork, effectiveness, initiative, positive attitude, diligence, dependability, flexibility, reliability, and endurance. Skill sets include technical skills, problem solving, customer service, and communication.
Primary duties and responsibilities include promoting and upholding Grayback Forestry's mission statement, company vision, and core values at all times, maintaining a safe, productive, and positive work environment, maintaining and cleaning all equipment issued, complying with all state and federal regulations, using power tools and hand tools, cutting, clearing, and piling brush and trees in a forest environment, extinguishing flames and embers to suppress forest fires using hand tools, constructing fire lines and igniting slash for controlled burns, setting up water tanks, pumps, and hoses to fight wildfire and prescribe burns, and other duties as assigned by supervisor.
Education and/or experience required to become an entry level wildland firefighter includes a basic firefighting course that meets the National Wildfire Coordinating Group (PMS 310-1) standards, two additional required online self-study courses, and passing an agency required "Pack Test". Physical demands include the ability to perform hard manual labor on steep terrain, using chain saws and hand tools and to lift and carry 50 pounds or more. Work environment includes working in a crew (team) environment, outside in varying weather conditions, and may involve extended time away from home.
