Tax Accounting Intern
We are seeking a Tax Intern to support our Tax Department.Exemption & Resale Certificate ManagementAudit the existing customer certificate library — flag missing, expired, or incomplete certificates (like the one we just reviewed: missing expiration year, unverified ag/timber number, etc.)Draft request letters/emails to customers for missing or expiring certificatesFlag any certificate that looks questionable for your review before acceptanceUpload valid tax exempt certificate to AvalaraRespond to inbox for tax exempt certificate customersUse Tax Accrual SupportPull AP invoice data for the month; identify purchases where vendor did not charge sales taxDetermine whether each purchase is taxable in the ship-to state (using a taxability matrix you provide — don't have them invent the rules)Calculate accrual amounts and prepare a tax workpaper by state for your reviewMaintain a recurring-vendor cheat sheet so common purchases get classified consistentlyTax Account ReconciliationsReconcile sales tax payable GL accounts by state, monthlyTie GL balances to filed returns; investigate and document variancesReconcile use tax accrual accountsPrepare clean handoff schedules for month-end closeDocumented procedures for each recurring taskAudit SupportPull exempt certificates for auditPull invoices and analyze for auditsCreate sales reconciliation for auditPursuing a Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Taxation, or related fieldStrong attention to detailExperience working with Microsoft Excel, including sorting, filtering, and lookupsStrong organizational and time management skillsEffective written and verbal communication skills for customer correspondence and internal follow-upAbility to maintain confidentiality and handle sensitive financial information professionallyProficiency in Microsoft Office Suite, especially Excel and Outlook preferred
