Join us as a Software Engineer I and help us do what we do best: propelling business forward.  This will be a hybrid role so working between your home office and our Burlington MA headquarters.We are looking for an entry-level Software Engineer (SWE I) to join the OpenEdge Core Platform team at Progress Software. This role is an excellent opportunity for a motivated early-career engineer to learn how a large-scale, mission-critical enterprise platform is built, maintained, and modernized.As an SWE I, you will work closely with senior and principal engineers, product managers, and architects to contribute to the evolution of the OpenEdge core language, runtime, and supporting platform components. You will gain hands-on experience with systems-level development, legacy code modernization, quality and security practices, and modern development tooling—all while being supported by structured mentoring and leverage AI-assisted development tools to enhance productivity and code quality.In This Role, You WillContribute to the development and maintenance of OpenEdge core language and platform componentsImplement well-scoped features, enhancements, and bug fixes under the guidance of senior engineersLearn and apply best practices for code quality, testing, and secure developmentParticipate in code reviews, incorporating feedback to improve design and implementation skillsAssist with refactoring and modernization of existing codebases to improve maintainability and performanceWrite and maintain unit tests and functional testsCollaborate with product management and QA to understand requirements and expected behaviorParticipate in agile ceremonies such as sprint planning, standups, and retrospectivesUse AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot or equivalent) to support coding, debugging, and testing activitiesApply sound engineering judgment to validate AI-generated code for correctness, security, and performanceFollow team guidelines for responsible and effective use of AI in software development workflowYour BackgroundBachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, or a related field (or equivalent practical experience)Strong foundation in programming fundamentals (data structures, algorithms, OOP)Experience with at least one systems or backend language (e.g., C, C++, Java, C#, or similar)Familiarity with AI-assisted development tools (e.g., GitHub Copilot, ChatGPT, or similar)Familiarity with Git or other version control systemsAbility to learn new languages, tools, and frameworks quicklyStrong problem-solving skills and attention to detailClear written and verbal communication skillsAdditionally, It Would Be Beneficial If You HaveInternship, co-op, or academic project experience in backend or systems softwareExposure to compiler concepts, runtimes, databases, or operating systemsExperience writing automated testsFamiliarity with Linux/Unix development environmentsInterest in enterprise platforms, developer tooling, or language/runtime designWhy This Role MattersOpenEdge powers thousands of mission-critical business applications worldwide. Final base compensation is determined by a number of factors, including but not limited to job-related skills, education, demonstrable experience, and allowance for future and continued salary growth.
