The ideal candidate will have prior experience supporting Defense Base Act (DBA) or other federal claims work and/or a strong interest in developing expertise under the War Hazards Compensation Act (WHCA). In this role, you will assist attorneys in identifying, assembling, and submitting reimbursement claims to the U.S. Department of Labor (DFEC) for benefits paid under the DBA that arise from war-risk hazards.This position is an excellent opportunity for a paralegal who thrives on precision, analysis, and regulatory compliance to develop niche expertise in a highly specialized and meaningful area of law.Key Responsibilities Review DBA case files to identify matters potentially eligible for reimbursement under the WHCAPrepare and assemble reimbursement applications with supporting documentation, including payment histories, wage statements, medical records, and causation summariesDraft detailed statements explaining the nexus between the injury and qualifying war-risk hazardsConduct factual research using reputable sources and public records to confirm the occurrence and location of relevant incidents for claim verificationTrack submissions and correspondence with the U.S. Department of Labor and respond to DFEC development lettersMaintain reimbursement logs, reconcile payment records, and coordinate with insurance carriers and clients regarding payment statusesCommunicate with DFEC and insurance carriers regarding the status of reimbursement claimsMonitor and summarize changes in WHCA and DBA regulationsQualifications Bachelor’s degree required; Paralegal Certificate preferredMinimum 2 years of paralegal experience, ideally within insurance defense, federal workers’ compensation, or similar administrative law practiceFamiliarity with the Defense Base Act (DBA), Longshore & Harbor Workers’ Compensation Act (LHWCA), or War Hazards Compensation Act (WHCA) preferred but not requiredExceptional attention to detail and organizational skillsStrong written and verbal communication abilitiesProficiency in Microsoft Word, Excel, and document management systems (experience with LEAP is a plus)Compensation and BenefitsThe annual salary for this position is $70,000.
