Senior Research Compliance Analyst - Controlled Substances
This role is responsible for overseeing research compliance with a focus on controlled substances, ensuring adherence to federal, state, sponsor, and institutional regulations. The position leads the process of conducting audits, investigations, and program assessments to identify and mitigate risk. The ideal candidate will collaborate with faculty, staff, and leadership to promote a culture of compliance, provide subject matter expertise, and ensure institutional practices remain aligned with evolving regulatory requirements.ResponsibilitiesConduct audits and monitoring of research activities to ensure compliance with federal, state, sponsor, and institutional regulatory requirements, including risk‑based and for‑cause reviews.Provide operational oversight and compliance assurance for controlled substances used in research, including evaluation of regulatory requirements, institutional policies, and risk mitigation controls. Manage and monitor DEA and state licensure and registrations related to controlled substances used in research, including tracking renewals, amendments, authorized personnel, approved locations, and schedules.Review and monitor drug accountability practices, including inventory management, usage logs, reconciliation, loss reporting, record retention, and documentation to ensure audit readiness and regulatory compliance.Assess and oversee controlled substance purchasing, receipt, storage, security, transfer, disposal, and retention practices across research locations to ensure compliance with applicable requirements. Conduct onsite inspections and reviews of laboratories and research spaces using controlled substances, including pre‑approval assessments, routine monitoring, and follow‑up reviews; document findings and track remediation to completion.Design, implement, and maintain policies, procedures, guidance, and training programs related to research compliance and controlled substances; deliver targeted education and outreach to faculty and research personnel.Coordinate and facilitate interviews with stakeholders, leadership, and committee members, ensuring clear communication and timely updates on investigations and review activities.Analyze data from institutional systems and databases to support audits, investigations, and compliance reviews, ensuring accurate assessment of findings.Foster a culture of compliance by representing the office on university committees and providing training on research compliance requirements to faculty, staff, and committee members.Ensure institutional policies and procedures remain current and aligned with evolving federal, state, and sponsor regulations; serve as a subject matter expert across the research compliance function.Conduct program evaluations and develop operational and statistical reports to measure compliance effectiveness, identify risk trends, and support continuous improvement initiatives.Carry out additional duties and responsibilities as assigned.Requirements:Bachelor’s degree with a minimum of five years of experience in research administration, research compliance, internal audit, legal, or a related field.Knowledge and experience in investigations knowledge and experience.DEA/GDNA expertise is a plus.IHE experience will be extremely valuable.Prior experience in a university or research setting within highly regulated environments preferred.
