Part Time Living Historian

WE ARE LOOKING FOR A LIVING HISTORIAN AT THE ALAMOPOSITION DATAJOB TITLE: Living HistorianDEPARTMENT: Living HistoryREPORTS TO: Living History and Learning Programs ManagerDATE: Summer 2022STATUS: Full-time, Non-exemptWAGE: $15.00/hourPOSITION SCOPELiving Historians provide a uniquely immersive, educational experience at the Alamo, interacting with visitors in Texas Revolution era clothing and equipment while using third-person interpretation-meaning they are themselves but depict the highlighted historical eras via period-appropriate dress and activities. Living Historians provide information and detailed programs to groups of various ages. They also assist in the planning and execution of special events. Lastly, Alamo living historians also assist in the creation and implementation of new programming, inventory maintenance, tours, and other duties as required.DUTIES, RESPONSIBILITIES & ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSLearn the historical Alamo narrative to present to visitors, students, and tour groups.Responding to visitor questions about the Alamo and life in 18th and 19th century Texas.Become proficient in the use of other commonly used items from early Spanish, Mexican Texan, and American history.Assist in daily set up for demonstrations and programs.Lead interactive games, demonstrations, and activities for visitors of various ages, centered on life in early Texas history.Safely handle reproduction black-powder weapons and explain their use to the public.Dress appropriately in period clothing (19th century) daily, and in diverse weather conditions.Learn and demonstrate early 19th century skills and trades.Assist with the day-to-day maintenance of weaponry and living history inventory.Research and develop new programming.Lead the Living History portion of the Young Texans Tour when needed.Assist in the development and execution of special events.Follow all site safety procedures.REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONSSome knowledge of Texas history and geography.Experience in public speaking.Must be able to speak, read, and write English.Ability to work independently and within a team environment.Ability to exercise integrity, good judgment, critical problem solving, patience and initiative, especially when interacting with the public.Ability to function effectively in an ever-changing environment, stand outdoors in heat/ inclement weather for extended periods, and deal with frequent interruptions.Ability to work weekends.Ability to present to diverse groups and maintain control in difficult situations.Ability to lift, move and carry up to 40lbs.PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONSPrevious historical interpretation experience.Experience with black-powder weaponry.Experience with or knowledge of early 19th century skilled trades and activities.College coursework in history.Additional fluency in Spanish is beneficial.PHYSICAL DEMANDS & WORK ENVIRONMENTThe physical demands and work environment described in this job description are representative of those that the employee will encounter and are expected to meet to successfully perform the essential functions of the job. The noise level in the living history encampment and Alamo Plaza varies. There are no protective devices necessary to be worn or utilized in the outdoor environment. Minimal travel is required.
