JOB This position is for a seasonal assignment limited up to six months from date of hire.Make an impact: Join the City of Salem’s Stormwater Inspections Team as a seasonal Stormwater Inspections Technician (Natural Resources Technician) in the Public Works Department. The person in this position contributes to the Salem community by performing detention basin inspections designed to help mitigate flooding in Salem as a part of the City’s Community Rating System under the Federal Emergency Management Agency. The person in this position also helps protect local stream health by ensuring compliance with the stormwater inspections in accordance with the City’s Municipal Separate Storm Sewer System (MS4) permit and Stormwater Management Plan requirements. The person in this position will work with two other stormwater inspections staff to inspect detention basins, green stormwater infrastructure, and mechanical stormwater facilities in Salem.What you will do: The person in this position will assist the stormwater inspections technicians with both field and office work. Field work will consist of performing inspections of public and private detention basins, vegetated water quality treatment facilities, and mechanical stormwater infrastructure. Our goal is to inspect a minimum of 1100 facilities annually. Upon completion of training, the Natural Resource Technician will inspect facilities and perform field investigations independently. Office work will consist of organizing inspection information including locating, gathering, and organizing plans and as-builts, maintenance agreements, and additional information associated with the facility inspection and maintenance. There may be opportunity to provide outreach to private stormwater facilities owners as well to support the environmental outreach, natural areas, stream cleaning, and environmental monitoring programs.Lifting heavy objects with mechanical assistance is a common task of the job. Additional information on job responsibilities: Inspect, map, and record natural and mechanical stormwater treatment infrastructure. Conduct field data collection, analysis, drafting, and inspections. Assist with inventory and assessment of the City's natural resources and infrastructure. Update program plans, including field mapping, data entry, resource analysis, and characterization. Assist with public outreach for natural resources and stormwater-related programs, plans, and projects. Research grant opportunities and assist with application preparation. Conduct research, compile data, and prepare concise and clearly written reports and associated maps. Physical RequirementsWork outdoors in all weather conditions, carrying gear and often working along busy roads. Must be able to work outside on uneven terrain and in inclement weather. Exert up to 50 pounds or more of force occasionally and/or a negligible amount of force frequently or constantly to lift, carry, push, pull, or otherwise move objects. Perform tasks that may require stooping, kneeling, standing, walking, reaching, using manual dexterity, and performing repetitive motions. Visual acuity necessary to perform an activity such as preparing and analyzing data and figures; transcribing; viewing a computer terminal; expansive reading and writing; visual inspections of environmental conditions.
