Distinguishing Features of the Class: Under general supervision, an incumbent of this class is responsible for advanced technical work involving the application of radionuclides to various designated portions of the body to assist physicians in the detection, diagnosis and treatment of diseases and abnormalities. Work involves the proper positioning of patients, the maintenance and adjustment of nuclear equipment, and the maintenance of radiographic files for a prescribed period. This level is distinguished from the Nuclear Medicine Technologist in that it includes work with specialized populations and does all out of department work. In addition, incumbents are responsible for patient flow and may oversee and assign work to the Nuclear Medicine Technologists. Does related work as required.Examples of Work: (Illustrative Only)Positions and instructs patients in preparation for the application of radionuclides using specialized equipment and procedures;Adjusts nuclear equipment to the correct setting for each examination as prescribed by the attending physician;Inserts access IVs and performs radioisotope injections;Performs renal scans on pediatric population;Handles radioactive spills;Handles emergency situations;Reviews the processing of nuclear studies;Prepares and maintains records and files of procedures;Purges outdated files, as directed;Troubleshoots equipment failure and makes repairs where possible;Ensures equipment is functioning properly on a continuous basis;Requisitions supplies, as needed;Consults with referring physicians as required;Provides training and technical direction to lower level technicians and nurses in nuclear procedures and processes;Establishes and maintains effective relationships with medical and nursing staff to ensure adequate and timely servicing of patients;Participates in continuing education programs in Nuclear Medicine Technology;May be requested to assist in the development of techniques for procedures;May assist in the use of a variety of equipment and procedures not routinely employed.Required Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Attributes: Thorough knowledge of the modern procedures used in the performance of nuclear medicine examinations for diagnostic purposes; good knowledge of the operation of all types of nuclear equipment; good knowledge of human anatomy; good knowledge of the required safety precautions in the operation and use of equipment; skill in the operation and minor repair of complex nuclear equipment; ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written directions; ability to direct and instruct others; ability to handle sick and injured patients properly; ability to read, write, speak, understand, and communicate in English sufficiently to perform the essential duties of the position; ability to effectively use computer applications such as spreadsheets, word processing, calendar, e-mail and database software in performing work assignments; thoroughness; reliability; good judgment; physical condition commensurate with the demands of the position.Minimum Acceptable Training and Experience:Possession of a valid license and current registration issued by the New York State Department of Health as a Nuclear Medicine Technologist. and certification and current registration with either the American Registry of Radiologic Technologists (ARRT) or the Nuclear Medicine Technology Certification Board (NMTCB) in Nuclear Medicine Technology or Computed Tomography.and two years experience in a hospital x-ray department or a private radiological laboratory where the primary function of the position was performing diagnostic work using radionuclides.Note: Only experience gained after attaining certification and registration will be considered in evaluating experience.
