Medical Laboratory Technologist (Medical Laboratory Scientist)

GiaCare is accepting applications for a full-time Medical Laboratory Technologist at Eglin Air Force Base, Florida 32542. Minimum Qualifications: A bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited college or university in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory science or in a related science (e.g., laboratory sciences such as chemistry, biochemistry, biology, microbiology, immunology, etc.). AND completion of a medical technology clinical practice program. Clinical practice programs completed after 1974 must have been accredited by the National Accrediting Agency for Clinical Laboratory Sciences (NAACLS), Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs (CAAHEP, formerly CAHEA), or the Accrediting Bureau of Health Education Schools (ABHES). The professional curriculum may have consisted of a post baccalaureate certificate program or be integrated into a four-year program of study that culminated in a baccalaureate degree. OR, A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics, AND two years of post-certification clinical laboratory experience (e.g., blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology, clinical microscopy, etc.) within the last ten years as a certified Medical Laboratory Technician by the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP-BOC), American Society of Clinical Pathology Board of Registry (ASCP-BOR) or American Medical Technologists (AMT). This experience must include performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory. OR, A bachelor's degree from an accredited college/university, including 16 semester hours of biological science (with one course in microbiology), 16 semester hours of chemistry (with one course in organic or biochemistry) and one course in mathematics, AND five years of clinical laboratory experience within the last ten years performing moderate and/or high complexity testing in blood banking, chemistry, hematology, microbiology, immunology and clinical microscopy (or categorical experience which matches categorical certification) in a clinical laboratory. Certifications: Basic Life Support (BLS): Current certification as a Medical Laboratory Scientist or equivalent by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or AMT. Licensure/Registration: Current certification/registration as determined by the American Society of Clinical Pathology (ASCP) or AMT. Experience: 1 year of experience as a Medical Laboratory Technologist withing the past 2 years Job Duties: May work in any section in the clinical laboratory to include hematology, chemistry, urinalysis, blood transfusion services, microbiology, serology, front desk, phlebotomy, point of care testing, and shipping. Able to work independently, read and analyze technical material, and to communicate effectively, verbally and in writing. Assures workflow continuity through communication. Demonstrates appropriate interpersonal and communication skills. A role model of positive, professional, and courteous manner and communications. Disarming situations of strife and anger when possible. Encouraging a cooperative team spirit and coaching others who need to adjust their interpersonal skills. Demonstrates knowledge of facilities and safety in laboratory including biological, chemical, radiation safety, and waste management Provides and performs analytical testing and/or procedures that require independent judgment. Communicates critical values in accordance with departmental policy. Recognizes problems and abnormal results and takes appropriate action in accordance with departmental policy. Completes competency assessment requirements. Provides training according to other staff based on competency assessment items, upgrade training, readiness requirements, and laboratory phase II checklist criteria. Assist with regulatory inspection preparation. Works with technical supervisor to correct deficiencies and areas improvement needed. Assists technical supervisors with oversight of sections. Ensures STAT, ASAP, inpatient, pre-operative, and outpatient requests are prioritized as appropriate, and that test results are reported in an accurate and timely manner. Assists with performance of laboratory Quality Assurance activities. Assists with reference laboratory (send out) processes. Acts as a technical and clinical resource for support staff. Determine the suitability of specimens for analysis. Prepare specimens for analysis and ensure that the physiologic state of the properties is maintained. Prepare reagents and primary reference materials as necessary. Calibrate, standardize, adjust, and maintain instruments. Verify correct instrument operation using established procedures and quality control checks. Identify the cause of common problems and make simple repairs. Schedule: Scheduled shifts are normally 12 hours in duration allowing a 30-minute lunch and shift change: 0600 – 1800 or 1800 – 0600 Sunday through Saturday. Shifts will cover weekdays, weekends, and holidays. Employees are to remain on shift until appropriate shift change is complete for adequate patient safety handoff. Laboratory shifts generally follow the Panama schedule. Work (3) 12 hour shifts one week and (4) the next.
