This is basic essential practice upon which all levels are built. The Sterile Processing Tech II prepares, tracks, and sterilizes equipment and instruments in an accurate and timely manner. Prepares sterile trays and supplies for all areas of the hospital. Responsible for decontamination, assembly of packs, operation of steam, low temperature, and other forms of sterilization. Perform multiple tasks assist in the daily operation of all units as well as being responsible for customer service.POSITION EDUCATION/ QUALIFICATIONS:High School diploma or GED equivalent required3 years' experience as a sterile processing tech required.Central Service Processing Technician Certification is preferredJOB KNOWLEDGE/EXPERIENCE:Knowledge of sterilization supplies, equipment and instrumentsKnowledge of organizing, containing, and transporting items of varying compounds, textures or quantitiesKnowledge of transporting and disposing of hazardous materials and sharp objects according to hospital proceduresKnowledge of sterilization procedures of various equipment and instrumentsKnowledge of wrapping and repackaging sterilized instrumentsSkill in using sterilization equipment and instrumentsSkill in arranging instruments on surgical traysSkill in following written instructions and performing multiple tasksSkill in establishing and maintaining cooperative working relationships with othersResponsibilities:POSITION RESPONSIBILITES:Promotes the facility mission, vision and values by effectively communicating them to others. Considers mission, vision and values in developing services, standards and practicesCollects dirty equipment and instrumentsSorts, loads, unload and decontaminate equipment and instruments according to procedures.Cleans, repackages, and sterilizes instruments according to procedures.Assembles trays, basin sets, packages, instruments and equipment and prepares items for sterilizationDecontaminates, restocks and assembles case carts and surgical traysEnsures specialty carts are stocked and ready for immediate usePerform quality control through routine testing and cleaning to assure sterilization equipment and instruments are functioning properly.Inspect equipment, instruments, and packaging for cleanliness, defects and/or malfunctions.Document sterilization cycle.Labels products with sterilization date.Performs other duties as assigned or required.Performs weekly inspections of all sterile items in the OR departmentChecks outdated items and package integrity of wrapped sterilize processing areaMaintains and updates the instruments tray inventory list following policies and procedures.Serves as a resource person in the department by training and developing new staffServes as a preceptor for new staffCompletes all additional assigned educational requirementsOther information:LINES OF REPSONSIBILITES:(Chain-of-command)1. Working Conditions: The individual spends over 95% of his/her time in an air-conditioned environment with varying exposures to noise. There is protection from weather conditions but not necessarily from temperature changes. The position does have low exposure to malodorous, infectious body fluids from patients and some minimal exposure to noxious smells from cleansing agents.C. Occupational Exposure: This position has minimal to no exposure to blood, body fluids, or tissues and is an OSHA Category III (although situations can be imagined or hypothesized under which anyone, anywhere, might encounter potential exposure to body fluids).
