Location: Washington, DC (Capitol Hill)Employment Type: Part-time, up to 30 hours per weekDates: June 22, 2026 to August 21, 2026Salary: commensurate with experience, starting at $25 per hourAcorn Outdoor Learning (acornoutdoorlearning.org) is a nonprofit outdoor education organization serving children aged 3 to 10. Our programs encourage children's curiosity, provide opportunities for scientific inquiry, and foster understanding and appreciation of the natural world by exploring outdoor spaces in our community. Program activities take place mostly in the field as we explore green spaces around the Capitol Hill neighborhood and beyond. We seek to create an inclusive and diverse community of learners and cultivate a sense of belonging and connection to nature.Job SummaryWe are seeking a passionate and knowledgeable instructor to join our urban outdoor education program for young children. This role combines early childhood education with field guidance to foster young learners' love for nature and exploration. The ideal candidate will have experience in ecology, field biology, environmental science, or a related field and enthusiasm for leading hands-on outdoor learning with young children.Naturalist Instructors will team with ECE Specialists to facilitate groups of children aged 3 to 8. Students will be grouped by age, and each teaching team will supervise 12 to 18 students, depending on the age range of the group. All summer instructors will work up to 30 hours per week; scheduling is flexible within our 8:00 am to 6:00 pm hours of operation.The ideal candidate may not have extensive experience with young children but should have some demonstrated ability to work with youth and a desire to learn about child development and the principles of early education. This program is largely field-based and very dynamic; plans are often adjusted based on weather or other circumstances. The job requires flexibility, collaborative problem-solving, and the ability to think on one's feet and adapt to changing circumstances. All summer staff will receive safety training, undergo a background check, and must be first aid certified, or willing to become certified.Key ResponsibilitiesTeaching and Curriculum Development:Lead outdoor explorations, field experiences, and hands-on learning for children aged 3–8Contribute knowledge of local plants, animals, waterways, and landscapes to enhance curriculum and field experiencesFoster social, emotional, and cognitive development through sensory play, storytelling, and collaborative activities in natural settingsCollaborate with a team of early childhood educators and naturalist instructors to develop rich and engaging experiences that capitalize on the local resources and natural history of our regionSafety and Risk Management:Ensure the safety and well-being of children during outdoor activities; including while walking and on public transitConduct risk and hazard assessments and maintain first aid readiness in all outdoor settingsProgram Support:Communicate with parents about program activities and post updates throughout the day on our family communication platformAssist with transporting and maintaining supplies and equipmentQualificationsEducation and Experience:Completion of or enrollment in a degree program in ecology, biology, environmental science, environmental education, or a related field; or 2 years of experience as a naturalist guide or outdoor educatorSkills and Competencies:Creative problem-solving and adaptability in outdoor settingsKnowledge of local flora, fauna, and ecosystemsDemonstrated cultural competence and experience working with students of diverse backgrounds and needsCPR and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain)Physical Requirements:Ability to work outdoors in various weather conditionsAbility to walk up to 5 miles per day and climb stairsAbility to lead children on walks and perform light physical tasks such as moving and carrying suppliesThe following additional qualifications are desirable but not required:Experience with nature-based pedagogy or Reggio Emilia approachesCertification in environmental education or outdoor leadershipExperience or certification in STEM or art instructionProficiency in spoken and written SpanishWhat We Offer:A supportive, collaborative work environment dedicated to fostering a love of natureThe chance to work in beautiful, dynamic outdoor settingsHow to Apply:Please complete the brief application and following steps listed at https://www.acornoutdoorlearning.org/jobsThe priority application deadline is March 31.
