MEDICAL DIRECTOR, CRISIS TRIAGE AND STABILIZATION CENTER - PSYCHIATRY

Job Summary The Medical Director, Crisis Triage and Stabilization Center will manage care delivered in the Crisis Triage and Stabilization Center (CTSC). The CTSC is an adult unit for patients requiring up to 24 hours of acute treatment for various mental health conditions. Clinical activity occurs at Provident Hospital and includes consultations in the Emergency Department, behavioral health intake, inpatient medical/surgical units, and the Intensive Care Unit. Administrative Responsibilities Review applicable Collective Bargaining Agreements and consult with Labor Relations to generate management proposals. Participate in collective bargaining negotiations, caucus discussions, and working meetings. Document, recommend, and effectuate discipline at all levels; work closely with labor relations or counsel. Initiate, authorize, and complete disciplinary actions pursuant to system rules and applicable agreements. Direct and effectuate management policies and practices. Access and navigate the CCH records system to obtain necessary information. Contribute to the management of staff and system development. Develop and refine system policies and procedures. Use independent judgment to identify staffing issues and perform necessary functions such as hiring, transferring, laying off, or disciplining employees in accordance with collective bargaining agreements. Work with Labor Relations to discern past practice when required. Typical Duties Provide clinical leadership and oversight to ensure high‑quality psychiatric care in crisis. Supervise psychiatric providers and manage coverage schedules. Give on‑call coverage to respond to urgent consultations and admissions outside regular hours. Ensure accurate and timely documentation of assessments, treatment plans, progress notes, and other clinical documentation. Provide direct feedback to staff and hospital administration. Conduct semiannual reviews of reporting staff with the Chair of the Department of Psychiatry as part of the ongoing provider performance evaluation. Develop and implement policies and procedures governing the unit, ensuring regulatory compliance. Assess safety, determine need for further hospitalization, and provide appropriate pharmacotherapy. Educate patients, students, residents, and clinic staff on mental health screening and treatment. Document encounters and communicate diagnoses and recommendations to appropriate medical staff. Report abuse or neglect per Illinois law and CCH policies. Refer patients to appropriate psychiatric, medical/surgical, and social services. Collaborate with emergency department staff, outpatient providers, and community agencies to ensure seamless transitions of care. Participate in quality improvement activities such as case reviews, peer consultations, and performance evaluations. Maintain active licensure in Illinois, credentials with CCH, and board certification with the American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology. Attend required meetings and participate in assigned committees. Ensure all operations align with regulatory requirements and best practices. Maintain an active clinical load of at least 50%. Perform other duties as assigned. Minimum Qualifications Doctor of Medicine or Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine from an accredited program and General Psychiatry residency from an accredited program. Licensed as a physician and surgeon in the State of Illinois prior to employment. Cleared for privileges by Medical Staff Services by start of employment. American Board of Psychiatry and Neurology Board Certified in General Psychiatry. Three years of clinical practice experience working with patients in psychiatric crisis or inpatient units. Two years of leadership experience within a hospital or health system. Preferred Qualifications Five years of experience providing psychiatric evaluation and treatment to patients. Five years of post‑residency clinical experience in a complex healthcare environment. One year of administrative and management experience in a multifaceted psychiatry department. Knowledge, Skills, Abilities and Other Characteristics Knowledge of applicable departmental, county, state, and federal regulations regarding patient care. Understand age‑specific and culture‑specific differences in the target population. Experience with gender, age, race/ethnicity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, substance abuse, and medical issues of the treatment population. Teach and supervise medical students in emergency, consultation, and ambulatory psychiatry. Excellent human relations and oral/written communication skills. Strong organizational and time‑management skills for high‑volume patient care and referrals. Facilitate teamwork and collaborative interaction between clinical staff and other practice personnel. Participate in quality improvement and professional development activities. Comfort with direct supervision of other clinical staff members and teams. Work independently, prioritize, and manage time. Apply critical thinking to determine course of action and communicate decisions to patients, families, and staff. Provide clear and concise documentation and maintain confidentiality. Physical and Environmental Demands Work occurs in a healthcare environment requiring adherence to all hospital and department‑specific safety requirements, including personal protective equipment, hand hygiene, and engineering and work‑practice controls.
