Recreation Specialist-Fitness/Wellness

Recreation Specialist Fitness Plans, coordinates and implements classes, and activities for the fitness program areas by assisting in hiring and supervising part-time employees, providing general and on-site supervision of all programs, coordinates promotions and marketing strategies and conducts evaluations of specific programs. Involves extensive customer relations with patrons enrolling in Parks & Recreation programs and services and internal City staff members.The salary range for this position is $22.38- $30.21 per hour with a hiring range of $22.38 - $26.30, depending on qualifications and experience.First reading of applicants will take place on Friday, 2/16/24 at 12:00 P.M. This is an entry-level position with opportunity for development and growth within a community organization.Please include a cover letter and resume with application.Essential job functions:Teaches and oversees a variety of fitness/health classes, SilverSneakers and assists as needed with class substitutions.Provides individual fitness consultations including personal training and conducting circuit/weight room orientations as needed.Assists with recruiting, interviewing, hiring, and training employees: planning, assigning, and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems.Plan, organize and evaluate classes, activities, and special events on a seasonal basis by researching fitness trends.Assists in facilitating staff training applicable to the program area.Write and edit activity guide descriptions and promote/market programming.Secures appropriate facility space for all programs and activities.Assists fitness instructors with classroom set-ups, rosters and equipment needs.Conducts facility inspections to ensure safe classroom environment; follows up with repairs and maintenance requests as needed.Provides on-site supervision of programs, classes and events.Provides exceptional public relations by notifying class participants and instructors of class changes.Processes class registrations and refunds and replies to all inquiries in a timely manner.Works with Supervisor to monitor budget, purchase and inventory program supplies and equipment.Evaluates and improves class programs on an on-going basis, utilizing statistics to plan and market future programs and classes.Provides orientation for the LED Light Therapy bed and equipment.Other job functions:Other duties as assigned.Supervisory duties:Provide effective daily supervision and support to all fitness instructors and personal trainers.Highest level supervised: non-exempt employees.Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization's policies and applicable laws.Job qualifications:Knowledge, skills and abilities: Excellent verbal and written communications skills, ability to work well with others, plan, organize and create innovative activities. Must possess a sound knowledge of a variety of fitness programs and the ability to provide training to instructors on proper exercise techniques. Establish and maintain effective working relationships and work cooperatively with others. An equivalent combination of education and/or experience may substitute for education requirement on a year-for-year basis. Supervisory experience preferred. One (1) year experience in recreation programming required, with emphasis on Fitness/Wellness and/or Recreation programming preferred. Experience with Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Publisher, and Outlook) required.Licensure and/or certifications: Must possess a valid driver's license. Current First Aid and CPR certification or ability to obtain within 90 days of hire date required.Current Group Fitness and/or Personal Training certification.Material and equipment directly used: Rec-Trac software, audio-visual equipment, telephone, computer, printer, photocopier, digital camera, two-way radio, paging system, fitness sound systems/wireless microphones, computerized fitness programs on exercise equipment. Cardiovascular fitness and exercise equipment commonly used in fitness centers.Working conditions physical requirements: Typical recreation activity setting. Requires bending, stooping and kneeling to perform the essential functions related to this position. Must possess the strength and stamina to perform strenuous physical activity and assist guests. Some evening and weekend hours will be required.
