Seasonal Educator

Summary20 to 35 hours per weekThis position involves working as an educator at the Blue Ocean Discovery Center, as well as leading and assisting with off-site educational programs and beach cleanups.Work alongside local tidal pool species.This position is ideal for individuals seeking experience in environmental education or marine biology.General ResponsibilitiesBlue Ocean Discovery Center Responsibilities (75% of job)Teach guests about Gulf of Maine species, environmental issues, and solutions.Facilitate proper animal handling and respectful behavior at the touch tank.Assist with animal care duties, including tank cleaning and feeding.Maintain the appearance and cleanliness of the Blue Ocean Discovery Center exhibits and staff space.Collect admission.Work as a member of the Blue Ocean Discovery Center team. Assist with beach cleanups as needed and pass out supplies to visitors.Take photos and videos daily and upload to Google Drive.Complete other tasks as assigned by the Education Coordinator.Outreach Education Responsibilities (25% of job)Assist with educational programs, including Ladder the Inflatable Whale, as needed.Assist with leading beach cleanups along the seacoast as needed.Take photos and film content for the social media team.QualificationsExperience working with the public and or children.Must be at least 16 and have reliable transportation.Must have taken at least basic biology courses, with marine biology as a plus.Familiarity with Gulf of Maine marine species, marine mammals, and intertidal organisms.Excellent oral communication skills.Ability to follow specific instructions.Ability to work both independently and as part of a team.Must be able to work in a variety of weather conditions and locations.Must be enthusiastic, flexible, self-motivated, and have a positive attitude.Schedule RequirementsMust be available from Memorial Day Weekend through the end of August, with preference given to those who can work until Labor Day Weekend.Must attend pre-season training in May.Must be available to work weekends and some holidays.Staff will be scheduled between 8 am and 6 pm, Sunday through Saturday, and may rotate between the Blue Ocean Discovery Center and off-site outreach programs.Physical RequirementsAbility to lift and move supplies weighing up to 40 pounds.Ability to walk and stand for long periods of time.Ability to work with hands in cold water and handle live animals with training.Payment and BenefitsHourly rate of $14 to $16 per hour depending on experience.Free parking is provided in the South Hampton Campground parking lot during shifts only.Opportunity to attend weekly internship programs and professional development seminars.Mileage reimbursement for beach cleanups and programs not on Hampton Beach.Application ProcessTo apply for the position, please submit a completed educator application, a cover letter, and three character or professional references.
