Laboratory Genetic Counselor

The Laboratory Genetic Counselor serves as a primary resource to ensure clarity, consistency, and efficiency across all stages of preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) case coordination and execution. This role is a key contributor to the continuous improvement of the PGT counseling service and supports departmental initiatives aligned with the broader goals of the CooperSurgical organization. The Laboratory Genetic Counselor provides pre-and post-test genetic counseling for referred preimplantation genetic testing (PGT) cases, including aneuploidy screening (PGT-A), monogenic disorders (PGT-M), and structural rearrangements (PGT-SR). This role is responsible for evaluating the technical and clinical feasibility of PGT-M and PGT-SR referrals, as well as guiding clinics, patients, and internal CooperSurgical teams through all phases of the PGT process. The Laboratory Genetic Counselor facilitates effective communication among stakeholders to ensure efficient workflow progression, high-quality service delivery, and a seamless patient and provider experience. Essential Functions & Accountabilities: Provide pre- and post-test genetic counseling to referred patients, clearly communicating the risks, benefits, and limitations of PGT testing to support informed decision-making. Manage PGT-M cases from initiation through test completion, including comprehensive case review and acceptance, and coordination with Laboratory Operations, Client Services, and Billing to ensure timely and accurate case progression. Collaborate with senior members of the genetic counseling team, including the Lead Laboratory Genetic Counselor or Manager, to support counseling and decision-making for complex PGT cases. Review referred PGT-M and PGT-SR cases for technical and clinical feasibility in accordance with established departmental medical policies and within defined turnaround time KPIs. Document all patient interactions in appropriate internal systems and generate patient consultation summary letters for referring providers within established departmental KPIs. Provide ongoing support to clinics, patients, and internal teams across CooperSurgical to facilitate smooth navigation of PGT processes and ensure a high-quality service experience. Contribute to departmental genetic counseling initiatives and projects, as directed by the Lead Genetic Counselor or Manager, with a focus on short-term improvements (<1 year) that enhance team performance, workflow efficiency, and service quality. Maintain professional competency through completion of continuing education requirements necessary for ABGC board certification and applicable state licensure. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, including ability to effectively communicate with internal and external customers. Intermediate skill in the use of Excel, Word and PowerPoint. Advanced preferred. Strong teamwork, interpersonal, and organizational skills. Ability to work independently, prioritize, and work under deadlines. Work Environment Ability to sit for extended periods of time using computer equipment in normal office conditions Experience 1 year or more of relevant genetic counseling experience preferred. Education Master's degree in Human Genetics or equivalent field from American Board of Genetic Counseling accredited institution. American Board of Genetic Counseling Board certified/Board eligible.
