SUMMARY OF ASSIGNMENTJob incumbents work under general direction of the building administrator and under specific direction of the special education teacher. The primary purpose of this job is to assist the assigned student(s) with unique needs in the acquisition of the special education program goals and objectives that cannot otherwise be met through individual accommodation that alone would be sufficient to meet the student's individual need(s). Provide instruction as assigned, behavior management, preparation of student(s) materials, and primary care of students such as lifting, toileting, washing, appropriate medical intervention and feeding. Assignment may be at the elementary or secondary level.III. ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONSDepending upon the needs of the student(s), as stated on the IEP, and the direction given by the special education teacher, any or all of the following essential functions may be applicable to the job assignment.1. Assists students with hygiene, including suctioning and personal needs, such aslifting, toileting, washing and feeding, including G-tube. Prepares and givesintervention and medication under the direction of a knowledgeable professional.2. Assist student(s) with transport and/or accompany student(s) in transition activities.3. Assists with management of high-risk students that are severely emotionallydisturbed and/or dangerous.4. Assists with preparation for and implementation of behavior management techniques,educational and vocational instruction and vocational placement programs.5. Assists with IEP preparation at the direction of the classroom teacher. Monitorstimelines for due process with re-evaluations and IEP's under the guidance of thespecial education teacher.6. May instructs students incidentally in large or small groups while being primarilyresponsible for student(s) as assigned by and under the direction of the specialeducation teacher.7. Administers or assists special education teacher with administration of assessmentinstruments.8. Prepares materials for use by student, teacher and parents; types, hand draws,reproduces and collates.9. Maintains class during special education teacher's absence. Supervises studentsduring lunch, recess, on and off the bus, assembly, and to other building locations.10. Uses personal computer for data entry and to produce correspondence and reports;operates typewriter, copier, FAX, other office machines and assistive technologydevices which the student(s) must use.11. Under the direction of the special education teacher, maintains students recordsand files such as FTE count, month end reports, schedules, attendance records,credits earned and required classes and credits for graduation. May monitor three(3) year evaluations for state compliance.12. May assist with profile development for education and vocation planning.13. Performs other duties as assigned.The essential functions listed above are not exhaustive and may be supplemented as necessary. The position may perform a variety of non-essential functions consistent with the scope and intent of the position.IV. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONSA. Education and Experience1. High school diploma or it's recognized equivalent (GED) and; two years of study at aninstitution of higher education (72 quarter hours); or an associate's degree(or higher); or a passing score (455) on a state or local assessment.2. Two (2) years of successful work experience with special education students and/orequivalent training or certification in the specific area of need for the student(s).3. Completion of the Fourteen (14) Special Education Core Competencies or obtainwithin the first 90 days from date of hire.B. Required Knowledge, Skills and Abilities1. Knowledge of the following:a) Classroom/behavior management techniquesb) Special Education terminologyc) Lifting, toileting and feeding techniquesd) Restraint techniquese) Verbal de-escalation2. Ability to work independently and to independently learn operations, procedures.processes and uses of equipment.3. Ability to exercise sound judgment including the handling of confidential matters.4. Ability to lift up to 50 pounds and knowledge of proper lifting techniques.5. Ability to communicated and interact clearly, concisely, courteous and respectfullywith students, parents, guardians, volunteers, teachers and other staff in a diverseenvironment.6. Ability to adjust to new and different working conditions.7. May require personal vehicle and proof of automobile insurance and Type II Driver'sLicense. May require the ability to get a pass for entry to the military base(s).8. Willingness to learn and implement medical intervention techniques under thedirection of a knowledgeable professional.C. Certification and Licenses1. Fingerprinting and Background check.2. Washington State Driver's License may be required.3. Type II Driver's License may be required.4. First Aid and CPR Card.5. Paras are required to complete the district provided Fundamental Course of Study (FCS) as outlined by the Professional Educator Standards Board (PESB). Positions excluded from this requirement are as follows: Health Room Para, Bus Para, In School Suspension Para, Library Para, Preschool Para.V. DESIRABLE QUALIFICATIONS1. College credit with major in education, psychology, counseling, social work or appropriate medical field.VI. WORKING CONDITIONSWork is performed in regular school building located throughout the District. Ability to sit or stand for prolonged period of time; use of fingers, hands and arms; operate a motor vehicle, and tolerance of loud noises, physically demanding situations and possible verbal abuse are all required. While performing the duties of this job, the employee may occasionally work in outside weather conditions and be exposed to wet and/or humid conditions, temperature fluctuations, fumes, or airborne particles, toxic or caustic chemicals commonly used in instruction and/or cleaning. It may be expected that the individual could be exposed to blood or other potentially infectious materials during the course of their duties.
