Transportation Mechanic

Transportation Mechanic QUALIFICATIONS: High school diploma or equivalent. Must be able to obtain an Alabama CDL and bus Driver’s Certificate within six (6) months of employment. Must meet all local, state, and federal licensing requirements and regulations required to operate a school bus and automobile. Completion of a Certified Auto Mechanic Apprenticeship, or written verification of four (3) years’ experience as an auto/truck mechanic, or written verification of (5) years’ experience as an assistant mechanic in a school bus shop. Must pass and is subject to drug tests as required by federal and state law and the Board's policies regarding drug testing, operating school-owned vehicles, transporting students and all applicable policies. Must meet background clearance requirements as specified by Alabama statutes and State Board of Education regulations. SALARY LEVEL: 9 FLSA: Non-Exempt REPORTS TO: Transportation Director SUPERVISES: Assigned transportation and bus shop personnel TERMS OF EMPLOYMENT: Salary and benefits shall be paid consistent with the system’s approved compensation plan. Length of the work year and hours of employment shall be those established by the system. DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Accepts and completes assigned jobs and overall supervision. Maintains safety standards always. Maintains good relationships with drivers and other school employees. Accurately diagnoses and repairs school system transportation equipment. Assumes responsibility for the proper use of all parts received. Reports any abuse of vehicles and/or equipment to the Transportation Director. Exhibits skill and efficiency in performing routine and preventive maintenance to all vehicles and equipment. Maintains work hours in accordance with Board policy; reports absences in a timely manner. Reports job-related injuries according to Board procedures. Maintains confidentiality regarding school/workplace matters. Models and maintains high ethical standards. Demonstrates initiative in the performance of assigned responsibilities. Maintains expertise in assigned area to fulfill project goals and objectives. Participates successfully in the training programs offered to increase skill and proficiency related to assignment. Keeps Director informed of potential problems or unusual events. Responds to inquiries and concerns in a timely manner. Demonstrates support for the school system and its goals and priorities. Demonstrates initiative in identifying potential problems or opportunities for improvement. Operates system-owned vehicles in accordance with state law and Board policies. Assumes other reasonable and equitable job-related duties assigned by the immediate Director. KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: Demonstrated success in performing a wide variety of tasks requiring an understanding and proficiency of mechanical repair. Ability to diagnose and repair vehicle problems. Able to lift and install heavy parts. Ability to read instruction manuals and printed instructions. Ability to communicate effectively and follow instruction. Physically able to use heavy tools and equipment. Physical dexterity, mobility, and strength to stoop, bend, lift, reach, and climb as needed to perform the essential functions of this position. PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS: Medium Work: Exerting up to 50 pounds of force occasionally, and/or up to 20 pounds of force frequently and/or up to 10 pounds of force as needed to move objects.
