Lead Data Engineer
Lead Data EngineerB2B | Freelance Remote | 12-month contract initally We are partnering with a global energy technology leader to find a Denodo Resident & Lead Data Engineer for a major data enablement programme within its Gas Services business. The business is building a central Data Backbone to give teams trusted self-service access to data, speed up AI adoption and support everything from business-led data products to enterprise-scale solutions. You will be the senior Denodo authority on the programme, combining platform architecture, hands-on engineering, training and coaching. This is not a standard Data Engineer role. You will act as the resident Denodo expert, building internal capability and reducing reliance on external consultancy.
What you will do:
- Lead Denodo architecture, standards and best practice for data product development
- Design and optimise virtualised, cached and governed data solutions across SAP, Snowflake, Power BI and Microsoft technologies
- Build and deliver a technical training programme, including workshops, hands-on labs and developer playbooks
- Coach and mentor 150+ Data Product Developers and support 30+ advanced practitioners
- Run office hours and data clinics, and act as the senior escalation point for complex issues
- Review solution designs for security, governance, metadata and performance
- Contribute to a Year 1 target of 500 data products
- What you will bring 10+ years in Data Engineering, Data Architecture or Data Platform implementation in large enterprises
- Expert Denodo experience covering semantic modelling, virtualisation, caching, performance, security and governance
- Denodo 9 certifications as Architect, Developer and Administrator (Associate minimum, Professional preferred)
- Track record leading enterprise-scale Denodo implementations or resident consulting engagements
- Strong SQL, data integration and performance tuning skills
- Hands-on Snowflake and cloud data platform experience, plus SAP integration
- Experience delivering technical training and mentoring developers
- Clear communication with technical and non-technical audiences
Nice to have:
- AI, GenAI or agent-enabled data access experience
- Azure, Power BI or Microsoft Fabric
- Experience building developer enablement or learning programmes on global transformation initiatives
