This role is responsible for overseeing technical activities, ensuring regulatory compliance, managing staff, maintaining facility and equipment performance, and delivering high-quality analytical services to clients. The ideal candidate is a strong leader with deep technical expertise and a passion for operational excellence in a high-throughput production environment.Key ResponsibilitiesLaboratory Operations & Technical LeadershipOversee daily laboratory operations to ensure efficiency, quality, and timely project completionProvide technical guidance on instrument troubleshooting, method development, and data interpretationEnsure proper use, calibration, and performance of laboratory instrumentationSupport development and implementation of new analytical methodsHigh-Throughput Production & Performance ManagementLead a high-volume production laboratory to consistently meet or exceed turnaround time (TAT) and on-time delivery (OTD) goalsMonitor and manage workflow, sample volume, and resource allocation across departments to maintain optimal throughputEstablish, track, and report key performance indicators (KPIs) including TAT, backlog, capacity, and productivityIdentify bottlenecks and implement process improvements to increase efficiency, reduce cycle time, and improve service reliabilityPartner with department supervisors to prioritize workload and ensure alignment with client expectations and contractual deadlinesDrive a culture of accountability and continuous improvement focused on operational excellence and customer satisfactionQuality & ComplianceEnsure compliance with ISO 17025, NELAC, DoD, and other applicable regulatory standardsPartner with QA to maintain and improve laboratory quality systemsMonitor regulatory updates and communicate requirements to staffSupport audits and inspectionsFacilities & Maintenance ManagementOversee laboratory facility operations, ensuring a safe, compliant, and efficient working environmentCoordinate preventative maintenance and repair of laboratory equipment, instrumentation, and building systemsWork with vendors and internal teams to maintain service contracts and ensure timely issue resolutionEnsure compliance with safety, environmental, and operational requirements related to facility infrastructureIdentify and implement improvements to laboratory layout, utilities, and workflow efficiencyTeam LeadershipManage, mentor, and develop a team of 50+ laboratory personnelOversee hiring, training, performance evaluations, and staffing levelsFoster a collaborative, accountable, and high-performance work environmentClient & Business SupportServe as a technical resource for client inquiries and data interpretationSupport project management and sales teams with technical expertiseAssist with proposals, QAPPs, SOWs, and client presentationsSystems & Process ImprovementOptimize laboratory workflows, systems, and data management processesCollaborate with IT to support LIMS and automated reportingDrive continuous improvement initiativesQualificationsEducation & ExperienceBachelor’s degree in Chemistry or related science (required)Minimum 5 years of laboratory management experienceEnvironmental laboratory experience strongly preferredTechnical SkillsStrong knowledge of ISO 17025 and environmental regulationsExperience with LIMS systemsProficiency in Microsoft Office (Excel, Word)Understanding of organic and inorganic analytical methodsLeadership & Professional SkillsProven success managing large teams (50+ staff)Strong organizational, problem-solving, and decision-making skillsExcellent communication and client relationship skillsDemonstrated ability to manage high-throughput operations and meet performance targetsExperience with managing P&L (preferred)Work Environment & RequirementsAbility to sit or stand for extended periodsOccasional overtime, evenings, or weekend work may be requiredHands-on use of laboratory and computer equipmentWorking at ALSThe ALS team is a diverse and dedicated community united by our passion to make a difference in the world.Our values are important to us, and shape how we work, how we treat each other and how we recognise excellence.At ALS, you’ll be supported to develop new skills and reach your full potential.
