Senior Engineer, Test Engineering {Portage, MI}

Hardware / Product Safety Test Engineer (Contract) Location: Portage, Michigan Contract Length: 9 months to start Position Summary We are seeking a skilled Hardware / Product Safety Test Engineer to support the verification, validation, and compliance testing of electronic hardware products. This role is responsible for planning, developing, executing, and automating test strategies to ensure products meet functional, performance, reliability, and regulatory requirements throughout the product lifecycle — from prototype through production release. The ideal candidate will have strong hands-on experience with electronic hardware testing and a solid background in 60601-1 medical device safety compliance testing. Key ResponsibilitiesDevelop and execute comprehensive test plans for electronic hardware, including PCB assemblies, subsystems, and complete productsDesign, build, and maintain hardware test setups, fixtures, and test equipmentPerform functional, electrical, performance, stress, and environmental testingDebug and troubleshoot hardware failures at the component, board, and system levelsCollaborate with hardware design engineers to review schematics, layouts, and design changes from a testability and reliability perspectiveDevelop automated test scripts and tools to improve test coverage, repeatability, and efficiencyDocument test procedures, test results, failure analysis findings, and corrective actionsSupport Design Verification Testing (DVT), Production Validation Testing (PVT), and manufacturing bring-up activitiesAssist with regulatory, safety, and compliance testing, including EMC/EMI, ESD, thermal, and electrical safety testingProvide recommendations to improve design robustness, manufacturability, and testabilityRequired QualificationsBachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering, Computer Engineering, or a related technical field3+ years of experience testing electronic hardware (flexible based on overall experience level)Strong understanding of analog and digital circuits, power systems, and embedded hardwareProficiency using standard lab equipment, including:OscilloscopesLogic analyzersPower suppliesSignal generatorsDigital multimeters (DMMs)Experience reading and interpreting schematics, PCB layouts, and datasheetsFamiliarity with IEC 60601-1 standards and understanding of differences between U.S. and EU compliance requirementsPractical hands-on experience with product safety testing, particularly IEC 60601-1 compliance testingFamiliarity with compliance test equipment such as:AC Withstand Voltage TestersHIPOT TestersElectrical Safety AnalyzersCalipersExperience performing hardware debugging and root-cause analysisStrong technical documentation and communication skillsPreferred QualificationsExperience with test automation using Python, shell scripting, or command-line toolsFamiliarity with embedded systems, firmware interaction, and communication protocols such as:I²CSPIUARTUSBEthernetExperience supporting manufacturing test development and production environmentsKnowledge of reliability testing, environmental testing, and failure analysis methodologiesExposure to regulatory standards including FCC, CE, UL, and IEC
