Controller

Position OverviewThe Controller is responsible for the accuracy and integrity of the company's financial records. This is a hands-on, individual-contributor role that owns the close process, daily cash management, and internal controls, and serves as a key working-level partner to the CFO on the company's overall financial health. The Controller ensures accounting practices comply with GAAP and supports the organization with reliable, timely financial information provided by someone who wants to own the mechanics of the close and cash cycle directly rather than direct a large staff. While disciplined transaction processing is foundational to the role, the ideal Controller goes beyond execution — using data, analytics, and reporting tools to turn financial information into insight the CFO and leadership can act on.Key ResponsibilitiesClose Process●      Own and execute the monthly, quarterly, and annual close process end to end, including journal entries, account reconciliations, and close checklists.●      Maintain the general ledger and ensure timely, accurate close in accordance with GAAP.●      Prepare close-related schedules and supporting workpapers for management reporting and external financial statements.●      Identify and resolve reconciliation variances, escalating issues that affect reported results.Cash & Banking●      Manage day-to-day bank balances and cash positioning across accounts, monitoring for shortfalls or excess balances.●      Post payments daily following bank processing, and monitor for declined or returned payments, resolving exceptions promptly.●      Support basic treasury operations, including funding transfers and bank reconciliations.●      Maintain visibility into working capital movements that affect near-term liquidity.Audit & Compliance●      Coordinate annual audit fieldwork, including PBC list management and timely delivery of supporting documentation.●      Maintain documentation supporting internal controls over close, cash, and billing processes.●      Ensure compliance with tax filings, regulatory requirements, and other statutory obligations.Billing Support●      Provide support on billing calculations and processes as needed, with the expectation that ownership can expand into this role over time.Data Analysis & Technology●      Use data analysis to identify trends, variances, and anomalies in financial data, going beyond standard close reporting to surface actionable insight for the CFO.●      Leverage AI and automation tools to streamline recurring accounting tasks — reconciliations, payment posting, exception monitoring — reducing manual effort and improving accuracy.●      Stay current on emerging finance and accounting technology, recommending tools or process changes that improve efficiency as the company scales.●      Build and maintain dashboards or BI reporting (e.g., NetSuite analytics, Power BI, or similar) to give the CFO and leadership real-time visibility into cash position, close status, and key financial metrics.●      Partner with the CFO to define and track KPIs that measure financial health and operational performance, translating raw transactional data into trends leadership can act on.●      Proactively surface risks, outliers, and opportunities in the data rather than waiting to be asked — bringing an analytical, forward-looking lens to the numbers, not just a processing one.FP&A Support●      Provide targeted support to the CFO on financial modeling, including pulling and validating data used in forecasts, board materials, and ad hoc analyses.●      This is a minor component of the role relative to close and cash ownership; modeling ownership sits with the CFO.Core Competencies●      Controllership and close experience: demonstrated ability to independently own and execute a full close cycle, including journal entries, reconciliations, and GAAP-compliant reporting.●      Daily transactional accuracy: comfortable owning high-frequency, recurring tasks — payment posting and payment-exception monitoring — with the same rigor applied to month-end close.●      Analytical mindset: able to move beyond processing to interpret financial data, spot trends, and communicate insight in a way that informs decisions.●      Hands-on execution: comfortable as an individual contributor doing the work directly rather than delegating; minimal to no direct reports.●      Cash management fundamentals: experience monitoring bank balances and supporting basic treasury functions.●      Audit support: experience preparing schedules and working directly with external auditors through fieldwork.●      Systems and BI proficiency: comfort working within an ERP environment (NetSuite preferred), payment platforms, and reporting/BI tools; ability to build clean, reliable reconciliation and reporting processes.Personal Qualifications●      Highly detail-oriented and comfortable owning recurring, deadline-driven processes without significant oversight.●      Self-motivated and reliable; thrives operating independently on a small finance team.●      Organized and process-minded, with a bias toward clean documentation and repeatable workflows.●      Curious and analytical by nature; looks for the story behind the numbers rather than just closing them out.●      Direct and clear communicator, able to flag issues early rather than let them surface at close.Qualifications●      Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or related field; CPA preferred.●      5+ years of progressive accounting experience, including close and financial reporting responsibility.●      Strong knowledge of GAAP and internal control principles.●      Experience working within an ERP system; NetSuite experience a plus.●      Experience with data analysis or BI tools (e.g., Excel/Power BI/Tableau or similar) strongly preferred.Reporting Relationship & TravelThe Controller reports directly to the Chief Financial Officer. This is an individual-contributor role on a small finance team, with limited travel required.
