Communications/Security Design Engineer

Audio-Visual Design Engineer Join a dynamic and growing company delivering innovative communications and security solutions, specializing in access control, video surveillance, and low-voltage systems for commercial clients. Position Overview We are seeking an experienced Communications/Security Design Engineer to estimate, propose, and deliver cutting-edge structured cabling and physical security systems. The Design Engineer will collaborate with the sales team and project managers to design and implement comprehensive security solutions from concept to completion. Essential Duties and Responsibilities: Participate in discovery meetings with the sales team and conduct project site surveys. Review construction plans, perform take-offs, and material specifications to compose BOMs (Bill of Materials) and bid responses. Estimate and prepare proposals for structured cabling- including voice/data/fiber optic cabling, sound masking- and physical security systems- including access control, video surveillance, and intrusion detection systems. Develop detailed security system designs, including control flow diagrams and system architecture. Communicate and coordinate technical design solutions with clients, installation teams, and vendors. Attend and complete job turnover meetings as required to cover all details and expectations of the project as they were designed. Provide pre- and post-sales support to sales and technical staff. Stay up to date on current and emerging technologies in physical security, including video surveillance, access control, alarm systems, and network infrastructure. Qualifications 3+ years of experience designing and estimating structured cabling and physical security systems, including video surveillance, access control, and intrusion detection. Expertise with major manufacturers such as Axis, Bosch, Honeywell, Hikvision, Lenel, Milestone, Genetec, and Tyco. Manufacturer certifications from major security manufacturers above are a plus. Skilled in integrating and managing comprehensive security solutions, including video surveillance, access control, alarm systems, and network infrastructure. Proficiency in TIA/EIA, ISO/IEC, and NEC standards for copper and fiber optic installations. Expertise in designing cable pathways, telecommunications rooms, equipment rooms, and implementing proper cable management and labeling practices. Strong understanding of LAN/WAN design, Power over Ethernet (PoE) standards, and expertise in copper (Cat5e, Cat6, etc.) and fiber optic (single-mode, multimode) cabling technologies, including performance requirements and installation techniques. Certifications such as RCDD from BICSI and PSP from ASIS are a plus. Ability to manage multiple projects and meet deadlines. Highly organized with strong attention to detail and workflow consistency. Excellent written and verbal communication skills. Ability to write a scope of work and finalize a system deployment and buildout. Must pass a required background check.
