Summer Camp Lead Counselor

The City of Portsmouth's Recreation Department is seeking 3 Summer Camp Lead Counselors. We are looking for individuals who love working with kids, bring energy to every day, create unforgettable summer memories, and take the lead in shaping a fun, safe, and enriching camp experience for all camp goers. This is a full-time position, 40 hours a week for 8 weeks. Hours are Monday-Friday, 8am-5pm. Pay rate is $19.00 - $20.00 an hour.A mandatory 2-day paid training which includes CPR is required. Training will take place in June, dates to be determined.NATURE OF WORKThe Summer Camp Lead Counselor will be responsiblefor the overall management and execution of the Camp Fun Stuff program,including managing groups of children, executing camp activities and schedules,ensuring camper safety, and overseeing group operations to provide a positiveand enriching experience for all participants; essentially acting as the leaderand decision-maker for all aspects of their assigned group during the summerseason.Summer activities may include, outdoorpool visits, field trips, arts and crafts, sports, games, drama performances,and hobbies. Lead Counselors will provide a safe and fun learning environmentfor elementary-aged children, while practicing and modeling all City safetyprotocols. Summer camp director is afull time, eight (8) week program plus additional training hours.SUPERVISIONWorkis performed under the direction of the Recreation Supervisor(s) and AssistantCamp Director. Incumbent plans and carries out daily work with a degree ofindependence and teamwork. Performance is subject to review according to theCity's personnel plan through observation, reports and the results achieved.ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONSThe essentialfunctions or duties listed below are intended only as illustrations of thevarious types of work that may be performed. Executesactivities such as arts and crafts, sports, games, outdoor pool visits,swimming, cook-outs, nature walks, field trips, and camp events.2. Maintainand enforce safety rules and regulations in the recreational facilities andother City property.3. Performsfirst aid following prescribed procedures and contacts emergency medicalpersonnel when required by the situation.4. Demonstratesuse of recreational equipment and teaches participants the principles,techniques, and safety procedures for each activity.5. Greetsnew arrivals and introduces them to other campers; explains camp and facilityrules.6. Interactsprofessionally with parents and the public.7. Reportscamper and parent complaints to leadership and works to resolve issues.8. Supportsstaff within their group.9. Performsother related duties as required.REQUIREDKNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIESAn incumbent in this position consistently demonstrates a(n)...1. Ability to maintain attention and high level of energy or excitement for extendedperiods of time.2. Abilityto participate in games, sports, and physical activities including water-basedgames and activities.3. Strongorganizational and communication skills.4. Abilityto learn and enforce the camp's safety and operating rules.5. Mustbe responsible and dependable daily.6. Mustpossess supervisory skills necessary to maintain a functional staff.7. Ability to communicate effectively with thegeneral public, City staff, and government officials at all levels.ENVIRONMENT,WORKING CONDITIONS, PHYSICAL AND MENTAL EFFORTWorkis performed indoors and outdoors in various weather conditions. Must be able to physically manage and supportchildren when needed for safety in general camp activities. Position includeslimited physical requirements including lifting and assisting children weighingapproximately 20-100 pounds. Able tolead and participate in camp activities including, but no limited to running,swimming, team building initiatives, and physical games.MINIMUM REQUIREDQUALIFICATIONSMusthave a high school diploma or a graduate equivalency diploma (GED). Previous experience working in camp, youthprogramming, recreation, working with children, or related fields is preferred.Candidate must be confident in a supervisory role.(The above descriptions are illustrative.
