Research Engineer
Research Engineer - High-Performance Trading Systems
Location: Miami / New York
Experience: 2 - 12+ years
If you're honest with yourself…
Are you actually building systems that directly drive outcomes ,
or are you mostly building infrastructure that sits a few layers away from the real decisions?
Most engineers never get close to the part that actually matters.
The models get designed somewhere else.
The impact gets credited to someone else.
The systems they build become support layers.
Important… but distant.
This role sits right in the middle of it.
The Environment
You'll join a small, highly technical team embedded directly inside a global electronic trading platform.
Your work will live at the intersection of
quantitative research
market microstructure
high-performance systems engineering
You'll partner directly with researchers and traders to take mathematical models and turn them into production-grade trading systems running in real time.
This means solving problems like
translating research models into ultra-efficient C++ implementations
optimising execution systems operating under extreme latency constraints
identifying bottlenecks from algorithm design all the way down to hardware
building scalable research data pipelines that accelerate experimentation
The systems operate in real markets, at global scale where improvements in latency, signal quality, or execution directly affect trading outcomes.
What the Work Actually Looks Like
You'll be responsible for designing and optimizing components of a real-time electronic market making system.
That includes
implementing quantitative models used in live trading
designing high-throughput data workflows for research experimentation
profiling and optimizing systems across the full stack
applying mathematical and computational techniques to market microstructure problems
working directly with researchers to turn ideas into production systems
Ownership is real.
Projects typically move from initial design ? implementation ? live deployment within the same team.
Who Thrives Here
The engineers who enjoy this environment tend to share a few traits
They care deeply about performance.
They enjoy working across abstraction layers from algorithms to hardware.
They're curious about why a system matters, not just how it's built.
And they're comfortable operating in environments where feedback loops are fast and results are measurable.
Typical backgrounds include
distributed systems or performance infrastructure
algorithmic trading or simulation platforms
hardware-aware performance optimization
Many candidates come from a tech background
Strong educational background
Python and C++ engineering
Finance experience is helpful, but not essential.
