SUMMARY DESCRIPTION: Join our Longfellow Team! Under direction of the School Principal and Specialized Programs Coordinator, the Breathe Special Education Teacher plans and provides for appropriate learning experiences for students with behavioral disabilities. The teacher will collaborate with a team of teachers, Ed Techs and administrators to provide a positive climate and an environment conducive to the intellectual, physical, social and emotional development for all students. The teacher monitors and evaluates student data and outcomes, and communicates and interacts with students, parents, staff and community. The teacher develops, selects and modifies instructional plans and materials to meet the needs of all students. Finally, the teacher will work wiht the school team to monitors appropriate use and care of equipment, materials and facilities.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
Serves as the special education case manager for the students served on their caseload.
Provides instructional programming to students and/or works with team to deliver instruction of curriculum to meet the needs of all students on caseload. In collaboration with team and Social Worker, plans interventions that, as much as possible, meets the needs, interests and abilities of individuals to ensure success for every student.
Maintains accurate and complete records as required by law, PPS policy and administrative regulation.
Assists the administration in implementing all policies and rules for the classroom; takes all necessary and safety precautions to protect students, equipment, materials and facilities.
Collaborates with colleagues, students, parents and community which reflect recognition of and respect for every individual.
Attends staff meetings and serves on staff committees as required. Performs related work as required.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES:
Knowledge of PPS curriculum, techniques for integrating curriculum, PPS policies, and effective instructional practices.
Understanding of the teaching/learning process for students with disabilities.
Ability to provide instruction that reflects multiple perspectives and multicultural education.
Ability to infuse technology into curriculum.
Ability to work effectively with administrators, colleagues, central office and school based staff, students, parents and community.
Excellent oral and written communication and human relations skills.
Willingness to reflect on personal implicit bias and a commitment to challenging personal perspectives and deepening self-awareness.
Knowledge of positive behavioral interventions and supports (PBIS).
Preferred qualifications: experience working with behavioral disabilities.
EDUCATION, TRAINING, AND EXPERIENCE:
Bachelor's degree in applicable field of special education from an accredited college or university.
Combinations of applicable education, training, and experience, which provide the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary to perform effectively in the position, will determine salary.
Experience implementing positive behavioral interventions and supports.
CERTIFICATE AND LICENSE REQUIREMENTS:
Meets Maine state certification requirements 282 - Teachers of Students with disabilities.
Required to attend school meetings, programs and activities outside the instructional day as needed.
