Software Engineer - Infrastructure

We led a seed stage financing for a company still in stealth (can't disclose too many details publicly) but they are hiring their first Infrastructure engineer. You'd be the categorical hire at the company. This is a hands-on, early-stage IC role for someone who has built infrastructure from scratch and wants to work in person in San Francisco, directly partnering with founders and investors at Greylock. You’ll build and scale container management, networking, load balancing, and distributed systems, with particular attention to privacy and security. The product is B2B/C and is building around computer use at the most foundational levels.
What You’ll Do: Design and build core platform systems that product teams depend on, such as async messaging infrastructure (Kafka or similar) that lets teams ship new use cases in days. Architect security and privacy features that unblock enterprise customers, including customer-managed encryption keys (BYOK), envelope encryption at low latency, and compliance requirements. You’ll work directly with customers on requirements and progress. Lead major re-architectures, such as streaming data to customer-owned databases, and guide a small team of engineers from design through delivery. Own the roadmap for developer infrastructure, including CI/CD, with the goal of moving toward fully autonomous rollouts and rollbacks. Define internal service interfaces and tooling so new microservices can be built quickly and consistently as the company scales 10-100x. Scale our data layer, including live Postgres splits and sharding, while lowering cost and operational burden. Raise the engineering bar by improving documentation, on-call practices and onboarding as the team grows.
Desired Qualifications: 5+ years building backend or infrastructure systems, ideally with a mix of deep infra (control planes, high-availability services) and product-facing platform work. Hands-on experience with security and privacy engineering: encryption, key management, data isolation, or enterprise compliance requirements. Experience designing distributed systems, including event-driven or streaming architectures such as Kafka, with a focus on reliability and latency. Strong skills in a typed backend language (Go, Python, Java or similar) and service-oriented architectures with defined interfaces (gRPC/protobuf).Experience operating and scaling relational databases (Postgres), including migrations, sharding and cost optimization. A record of technical leadership: you’ve scoped ambiguous projects, led other engineers, and worked directly with customers or partners to land them. Comfort owning problems end to end at a scaling company, from design and rollout to on-call.
